Ryan C. Connelly, tenor, is originally from small-town Pennsylvania. However, his schooling and career has taken him all over the globe, as he travels nomadically from gig to gig. In his time off-contract, he currently resides in upstate New York, where he teaches voice lessons and records remotely with his home-studio setup.

Ryan has been singing opera professionally since 2007, and along the way has branched out into many other genres-- Rock, Jazz, Musical Theater, even Video Game Soundtracks. His wealth of knowledge in the opera world means he is proficient in many languages as well, having performed in Italian, French, German, Spanish, Latin, Czech, Korean, and many others. While his degrees and training mainly focus on the classical side of music, he is more than familiar with contemporary genres as well, applying his well-honed technique to perfect any vocal line you provide.

I asked Ryan to do a duet with a soprano, and he integrated perfectly with the other voice, both when he was the lead vocal and when he had to do the counterpoint. Also, his interpretation of the song is always something special!

Interview with Ryan C. Connelly

Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: I absolutely LOVE to sing, act, and tell a story. While singing on stage means I get to communicate directly to the audience, I only get one shot, and I might not get to show everything I intended to. There is something so amazing about recording because I get to really perfect exactly how I want the story to be told.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: Real answer: That opera singers can't emote/act. I always bring every fiber of my being to songs I perform, and that extends to what I record. Watch me in the booth-- you'll never see a blank face. Fun answer: That opera singers have to be heavy! In the real opera world you will find every type of person you can imagine.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Definitely Classical! I have been singing opera professionally since 2007, doing so around the US and even some in Europe. I've definitely branched out a lot, but my foundation has always been solidly classical.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I bring precision, musicality, and excitement to every track I touch!
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: In a recording project, I'll typically take the music, plunk through it, internalize it. If there's something to listen to I will absolutely add that into the mix, to get a rounded picture of what the piece will look like. I try to get any questions out of the way before I even start singing, so I'm not practicing something that might not be what the composer intended. Then, it's all to the booth. I'll record as many takes as the project demands-- often I prefer to have plenty of extra good takes, just in case the client prefers one interpretation over another.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I have been slowly building my studio since my first remote project, that would've been back in 2015-2016 when I sang on the OST for Josh Whelchel's "Masquerada: Songs and Shadows". I mainly use Reason 10, with a Steinberg UR22 mkII and mic, which are portable enough that if I need to leave town on a gig I can bring them with me and record on the road! When I'm doing MIDI work I also bring along a small controller, the one I'm most partial to is the Akai MPK Mini.
