String arrangements

Peter Cavallo on SoundBetter

I love writing for strings, so much so that when I won an award for the Best Television Theme by an Australian composer in 2016, the review stated, '...for the string laden opening theme for series Nos Youm.' I know the power of a good string arrangement and pride myself on getting the best result.

There is nothing like a beautiful string arrangement supporting a lyrical melody or adding depth and emotion to a vocal. Whether it be traditional or contemporary classical, folk, rock anthems, pop ballads or even hiphop, a good string arrangement will always make a track shine. This is what I do. I can write a string arrangement for your piece or song and either hand you a finished score for you to give to your musicians or record the strings myself using my extensive sample library collection. I can even arrange to have it recorded for you with live musicians if you want someone else to do the work for you. I can also write a solo string line for violin, viola or cello to enhance your track. It's up to you how much you want done. With all scores I will provide a sample of what the arrangement will sound like in your track.

I'd love to hear about your project. Click the 'Contact' button above to get in touch.

Interview with Peter Cavallo

  1. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  2. A: An Opera.

  3. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  4. A: Writing music.

  5. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  6. A: Mainly give me as much info about the piece as you can. Then what is it saying or what do you want it to say. You are wanting strings for a reason... what is that reason?

  7. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  8. A: You don't have to know exactly what you want but as many descriptive words would be helpful.

  9. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  10. A: A pencil and manuscript paper... and an eraser.

  11. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  12. A: Rachmaninoff - The guy had skills!

  13. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  14. A: I have mainly worked on modern to traditional classical pieces.

  15. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  16. A: I can hear melody and lines very easily. Four part writing is my favourite because of the sheer depth you can achieve by simple yet effective harmony and rhythm.

  17. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  18. A: Strings can breathe life into a piece of music. They can enhance emotions whether that be slow swells or fast runs, a good arrangement should support whatever the composer has initially stated in their music.

  19. Q: What's your typical work process?

  20. A: If I'm writing a string arrangement to an already recorded piece, I'll first understand the emotional aspect of the piece and what it needs in the strings to bring it to life. Then do a sort of road map to get an idea of the dynamics required where and when in the piece. Then start listening for lines and commence writing. As always, my work process will depend on the depth of arrangement required or stated by the client.

  21. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  22. A: I use Logic Pro X as my main DAW. Dorico for my scoring and sheet music.
