I first met Thomas "Tommy" Korge as in house mixing engineer mid 80ies, when I recorded at the hottest Rock Studio in Town- Hotline Studios Frankfurt - We later on worked together as a producer/mixer team at Artlab Studios for chartbreaking Dancefloor and Pop projects.
We always had a great vibe and Tommys expert knowledge, fine ear, and great taste in music made long hours work seem short. He is known for constant great quality due to his long lasting "classic" sound.
He is great fun to work with and he gives a lot of bang for the buck.

Interview with Thomas Korge - Magic Masters

  1. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  2. A: Making Projects, Songs, Films, sound good ;-)

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: Atm I am mixing the DD5.1 Sound for a Documentary. Beside that I am working on the Mastering of a Frankfurt based Artist

  5. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  6. A: Both have Pros ad Cons....

  7. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  8. A: I will always give my best, just as if this was my own Production

  9. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  10. A: This got to be "FRO plays MOODY BLUES CLASSIX" We recorded in more than 10 Studios all over Europe, mixed 72T Analog (SSL4000G) and masterd digitally in our Studio (Dolphin Studio / 1994)

  11. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  12. A: not yet

  13. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  14. A: Meeting People and their Music, their Ideas and Feelings

  15. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  16. A: Levels - most Questions are about Levels. Since digital hates "Overs", I always recommed to be careful with Levels...

  17. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  18. A: "We fix it in the ...." Replace ... by "Mix" or "Mastering". Try to get it right before every next step. Neither Mastering, nor Mixing are Stages to fix things.

  19. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  20. A: The Story behind the Project

  21. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  22. A: Have a vision

  23. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  24. A: My HP Z800, my customised Quested Speakers, Cedar EQ, Jünger Compressor and a Fridge

  25. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  26. A: I started as Recording Engineer in the early 80s. Freelanced in some of the top Studios in Germany. Early 90s I started Dolphin Studios, close to Frankfurt. Magic Masters, my recent Studio, was found in 1996.

  27. Q: How would you describe your style?

  28. A: Creative in the first step, technical correct in the end... Living on both sides

  29. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  30. A: Linkin Park - I love the Creativity

  31. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  32. A: Take your time

  33. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  34. A: I have worked on almost every Style, since my first Mastering Studio was directly linked to a CD Pressing.

  35. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  36. A: To find the right balance...

  37. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  38. A: Like the Studio´s name says: Magic ;-)

  39. Q: What's your typical work process?

  40. A: First of all I ask my Customer a lot of Questions to get as much Information as possible. After that I listen to all Songs to identify the strongest and the weakest.

  41. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  42. A: The Studio is in the digital Highend Domain. And yes, I am still working in realtime, playing a Song back by one Prg. and recording it by another DAW. The reason is quiet simple, I love my Cedar EQ, which is a very rare Mastering Tool.

  43. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  44. A: I am taking Inspiration out of every Production I like.
