Interview with Robbie Cadet

  1. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  2. A: Lets just say, Analog to Digital became a thing for a reason. There can only be one king in this realm. :)

  3. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  4. A: To deliver a product that is up to your standards, and mine. If you're unhappy, i am as well.

  5. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  6. A: It allows me to be creative, and work on the things im passionate about, while also helping other artists get that much closer to their dreams. Its more fulfilling than I originally thought it would be.

  7. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  8. A: What is your turnaround time? Mixing/Mastering: 1-3 days Production: 1-2 weeks

  9. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  10. A: That mixing is just about getting volume levels right.

  11. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  12. A: What is a good reference song or two that you would like this to sound like? Are you married to every piece of the production? Or are you open to things like me swapping out drum samples or developing your synth sounds? If theres pieces of your production that would benefit from any of this, i tend to do little adjustments like this to make your sound fuller and more professional, but I know many artists prefer the work to be untouched besides mixing. Either way is totally fine with me as long as you're happy with the end result.

  13. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  14. A: Be open with communicating exactly what you want from a track. The more you give me to work with, the closer i can get to making your ideas a reality.

  15. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  16. A: 1) My Macbook with Ableton and Serum for 8 hour sound design sessions. 2) My Pioneer DJX Controller so I could DJ some beach parties on the island (The question didn't say I had to be alone!) 3) My Sennheiser HD 6 Headphones 4) A nice acoustic guitar for writing 5) My cellphone, so I could play drums on the garage band app. (And also to contact the outside world for help getting off the island)

  17. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  18. A: I became a musician on my 13th birthday, with my first guitar. But when I was graduating high school, I was pursuing both Law and Politics. Shortly after, i discovered how much I loved production, and decided that instead of spending the rest of my days in courtrooms arguing with people, I could spend it in dimly lit rooms enjoying my time with creative people. Thus, my career path was laid out. I've been doing production for 12 years now.

  19. Q: How would you describe your style?

  20. A: Production wise, Energetic. Most songs I produce generally have a very fun and huge energy about them that matches my personality. I think its important to translate who we are into original productions.

  21. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  22. A: Right now, i'd have to say Bad Bunny. I feel like we'd create something pretty wild in the studio, between the way our brains work creatively.

  23. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  24. A: Yes, Saturate Your Subs, and always test for mono compatibility. If you dont know the importance of either of these, feel free to contact me :)

  25. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  26. A: My whole life revolves around Electronic Music right now, and anything Dance/Pop/EDM is my specialty. But i've also mixed for Country Artists, Done production for Hip Hop Artists, and developed pop artists and singers.

  27. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  28. A: Mixing

  29. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  30. A: Clarity and Depth.

  31. Q: What's your typical work process?

  32. A: If its for mixing- I'll load the demo track into my Daw and turn the lights down in my studio and just listen to the song 2-3 times to get a feel for it and to pick up the vibe and what the artist wants to achieve with it. Then I import the multitracks, and find any problem areas that stick out or may clash with other tracks and start the process of elimination where its necessary. I go into each track or stem and do what i like to call "Audio Surgery" to really make sure every aspect of the song has care and attention paid to every detail, resulting in a better product overall. If its for production, there isnt a typical work process. We're creating organically!

  33. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  34. A: I've got two setups: Production Studio- Mac Pro, Ableton & Protools, An obnoxious amount of plugins, but even more importantly the knowledge of how to use them. Monitors- Yamaha HS10's w/ Sub and Rokit 8s for reference, Sennheiser HD6 Mix headphones. In the Booth is an AT4040 Mic ran through a DBX286s Compressor/Gate/Limiter into a UAD Apollo Twin. My setup at Home is a little simpler: Macbook Pro, Ableton, Scarlett Interface, Audio Technica ATH-M50x Headphones, and a 57 mic for demos.

  35. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  36. A: Finneas, Zedd, and Virtual Riot. I spend a lot of my non-work time doing sound design, and I am inspired constantly by all 3 of these artists that have unique and massively impactful ways of designing their sounds and creating atmospheres that push the boundaries of what you can do with pop and dance music.

  37. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  38. A: The most common work is between Mixing and Mastering sessions for projects that need to be polished, or writing brand new productions for an artist. It realistically depends on the week and who decides to contact me for work. I love both parts of the process equally, so i dont really have a favorite either!
