In my 20+ years playing and recording music, the most important thing (for me) has always been that a song’s elements should work together and not against each other. A musician first, I like to prioritize how the pieces fit. I think good arrangement is one of the most overlooked steps in music production today.

Once the arrangement is in a good place, I’m listening to how energy shifts between instruments and different song sections. Sometimes you need more kick drum to push the chorus harder. Sometimes the bottom needs to drop out. I listen to a lot of genres, and know that the right mix approach to the style of music is critical.
