Ed Garbanzo on SoundBetter

Latin Pop singer/songwriter, Mix & Mastering audio engineer. As a musician, it is easier for me to communicate clients and materialize their ideas in products. I put my skills and knowledge to achieve your goals in the best possible way. No major label credits, but with discipline and motivation one day I will.

ABOUT ME:
Pontificia Universidad Javeriana - Music with an emphasis on sound engineering (2013-2019)
It included the study of music theory, solfeggio, ear training, music history, and musical practices, shaping a well-rounded musician. Additionally, it covered sound engineering topics such as audio recording, editing, and mixing, including mathematical and physical concepts. The combination of these two areas of knowledge provides tools for working in music production. I received a scholarship and graduated with honors due to academic merit.

Nebrija University - Master's in Marketing and Digital Advertising (2020-2021)
This program introduced me to the fundamental concepts of both marketing and digital advertising, enabling me to apply them to the creation of campaigns focused on the digital environment. It involved the use of real-time tools to leverage audience insights for brand growth in the web 2.0 landscape. I learned about web analytics, affiliate marketing, social media, basic graphic design principles, e-commerce, and more. I pursued this program after receiving a scholarship from ICETEX in 2020.

As a songwriter, Ed Garbanzo is a true wordsmith. His lyrics are thought-provoking, heartfelt, and emotionally resonant. He has a knack for storytelling through music, and his compositions are not only catchy but also deeply meaningful. Collaborating with him on songwriting added an extra layer of depth and artistry to my project. What sets Ed apart is his ability to blend technical expertise with a genuine passion for music. He approaches each project with enthusiasm and a commitment to excellence that is truly inspiring. Working with him felt like a true partnership.

Interview with Ed Garbanzo

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: The song "Ser Viento" is one of the best songs I've made. I'm specially proud, because lyrics have a deep meaning related to my personality, and music sounds chill and calmed. I used almost all the tools I have to reach that sound, and before I made it, I didn't imagine that it could sound like that.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: I'm producing an EP for my solo project Ed Garbanzo to release next year.

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: Yes, I would recommend Pablo Matices, who is one of the best music producers, and mixing engineers I know.

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: In this moment digital. All of the tools I have are in the box, so in this point of my career I don't have much of a choice. I know that analog gear may save time in specific situations in which you have to reach a specific sound, but also, depending on the tool, you would have to save pictures to come back for corrections if needed.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: It doesn't matter if you are famous or not: I'll give my 100% to make your song an excellent product. I know that you are trusting art, that could be related to a dream or to a lot of effort, so I would treat your songs with love, patience and professionalism.

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: I like working with art, specially writing songs, because it doesn't feel like a job. It is kind of a dream to live of songwriting sessions.

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: Q:Does mixing includes audio editing? R: No, because they are different processes. If you need audio edition, it would be a different process, because it requires a different session, so if I did it in mixing sessions, I would lose valuable time to do a good job.

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: As you could find music for free on the internet, people usually think that it's free or that no one is paying for it, so I'm in a constant pursue to give value to music.

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: Why do you make music? Do you have music references? How can I help you to achieve your goal or dream?

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: There is many talent around the world. Find the one that best matches your needs, and that has the time to give his 100% for your project. We're sharing an industry and not competing, so there's no pressure. In my case, if I know someone who could be a better match for the job, I could recommend him or her.

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: Laptop, Interphase, Headphones, Microphone, Cuatro (Venezuelan ukelele).

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: Audio: I started in 2016 as a live sound engineer. I worked as a roadie, monitor and mixing engineer for diverse bands. Pandemics ended up these jobs so I studied a Master's degree in Digital Marketing. I started to edit audiobooks in 2022, and currently I'm manager of a music producer. Musician: I had a Reggae Band called Salvo Patria, where I had the chance to co-produce and album called "Gracias a la vida". I played in a band called Stereo Personal where I had the chance to co-produce and an EP called "Arrayán", and co-produce and songwrite a single called "Sintiendo". In 2020 I started my solo project called Ed Garbanzo, where I do 95% of all the work (DIY). So I songwrite, sing, produce, record, mix and master all of the songs.

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: Versatile. I usually adapt my skills to the project, and I actually enjoy it. I love diverse genres that include Baroque music way up to Bad Bunny. So, I'm not afraid to work out of my confort zone. I'll still give my 100%.

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: Honestly, I love to work with artists that want to make art for a living, because they usually have a professional approach. When I was a live sound engineer I had the chance to work with famous artists, but the next day I had to work with my friends. My conclusion is that numbers or fame doesn't mean that I have to work different. For me, every artists deserve the same respect and professionalism.

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: Every music production ends up with small mistakes. As long as you keep studying and giving your best, one day your songs will have world-class quality.

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: I usually work with latin music such as latin pop, reggaeton, urban music. However, I love singer/songwriter music, R&B. I consider myself a versatile professional, because I love a lot of music genres.

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: My strongest skill is discipline. I never stop. It is important because some days every human lacks motivation, but if you keep going on, you will achieve goals.

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: Everything I have. I'm the type of audio engineer, or musician, who use theoric tools to make the message very powerful. It means that sometimes is few or transparent my job, and other times is more technical. However, ART is always first.

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: Songwriting:I usually write melody and lyrics at the same time, but lately I'm starting to write melodies and then lyrics. Mix & Master: I receive the audio files, organize the session, listen, then find references and start to work.

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: I own a Macbook Pro, which is connected to an Apollo Twin, that goes to my monitors (JBL) and to Audio Technica M50x headphones. I only have in the box processes: Waves, UAD, Izotope, Lexicon, Native Instruments among others.

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: I'm fan of Julio Reyes Copelo, who is a colombian producer/songwriter that has inspired me since the first moment.

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: Songwriting: The most common type of work is that some musicians arrive with music references, or some chords and we start to write a song together. Or, they give me information, and I give them back a song. Mixing: They deliver me an edited multitrack, so I organize, listen and start to work.
