Interview with Jon Mattingly

  1. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  2. A: Many years of experience. I have had to pleasure of working on a broad range of musical genres from singer/songwriters to jazz to metal. Being a music major in college gave me the opportunity to play in many different genres and work production on those and many other projects as well. Then, touring in a rock band for 10 years gave me tons of exposure into the world of music.

  3. Q: What's your typical work process?

  4. A: I like to begin with a simple conversation with the client to find out exactly what they are looking to get out of their music. We discuss what vibe and feel the song needs to have and what market the final product will be in. I'll take a listen to the rough mix and any references they give me, take some notes and dive on into the song!

  5. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  6. A: Both digital and analog!

  7. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  8. A: Work with someone who enjoys your music and what you do.

  9. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  10. A: After attending EKU as a Guitar Performance Major, I toured intensely in a Louisville, Ky. based rock band hitting the East Coast and Mid-Western regions for 10 years. I worked production with Orlando Florida’s FFL Records and Bobby Burns from SoulFly/Road Runner Records. After deciding to retire from the “rock star” road life, I went back to hitting the tools and books and receiving my Audio Engineer Certifications from Long Island Recording Company, Audio Institute of American, and a BS in Business Management from MCU. Now the audio fixation has reached a new level, and I have opened the doors to ARC Studios to share my expertise and excitement for the world of music.

  11. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  12. A: Always use at lease one reference track when mixing, whether it be the rough mix or another mastered track all together. This allows you to keep yourself in check and make sure your song is moving forward in the right direction.

  13. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  14. A: These days I primarily work on rock, metal, modern country, pop and acoustic singer-songwriter records.

  15. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  16. A: I have a Pro Tools HD rig loaded with high end converters and loads of plugins. My studio driven in a hybrid mix of analog and digital equipment to offer the fast stable reliability of the digital world with the classic mojo of analog.

  17. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  18. A: I mix, master and produce/engineer songs for my clients. I also do quite a bit of post audio sound design, sound sweetening and full mixing/mastering (re-recording) for film and video.
