Lou Turner

singer, flutist, bassist

Nashville-based singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist with solo albums (Lou Turner) and collaborations with diverse artists in Nashville + beyond. My record "Songs for John Venn" (SPINSTER) which I produced has drawn comparisons to Van Morrison's Astral Weeks, Pavement, and Bill Callahan. I'm comfortable improvising as well as playing parts.

I'm offering overdubs on your session for female vocals, flute, and bass. I'm an experienced improviser and songwriter, so if you're not sure of what sound or part you need, I'm comfortable working with you to create my own!

I studied music theory, aural training, and songwriting at Belmont University in Nashville, TN and earned my degree in Community Development in the Music Industry. The communal and creative side of music is what most interests me.

I've recorded with and played live with a variety of artists across genres and sounds, such as: Josephine Foster, Eve Maret, Dan Melchior, Heinous Orca, Rig B, Styrofoam Winos, Crave On, Michael Cormier, Joe Kenkel, and Trevor Nikrant.

In my flute playing, I specialize in utitilizing technique and effects pedals to create a psychedelic effect but am comfortable playing a part as well. My bass playing takes inspiration from classic 60s/70s records as well as free jazz playing, and I enjoy finding unique, melodic lines that can also hold down the groove or the beat.

Vocally, I'm most resonant within an alto range but am comfortable singing soprano 2 as well. I greatly enjoy singing harmonies and have a knack for stacking two and three part harmonies in a doo-wop or classic pop/rock style. I'm skilled at matching the tone and voice of the lead vocal and willing to experiment!
