Mary Catherine Burns

Composer

Mary Catherine Burns on SoundBetter

I'm very versatile when it comes to composing for films. In my first year at the Savannah College of Art and Design, I composed the scores for four animated shorts. This opportunity allowed me to captivate and tell the story of each film in different styles. One even won third in the Animation Studio Festival in Paris.

I'm a composer and musician. I play piano, guitar, and a few other instruments. I have a strong background in music theory and can skillfully use software like Logic Pro X and Sibelius in creating my music.

I have wanted to pursue film scoring since high school and am deeply influenced by composers Hans Zimmer, Michael Giacchino, and James Horner.

As your film composer, I will be very open to your vision for your film and help bring your story to life through music. I'm reliable, I'm hardworking, and I can easily adapt to any changes or feedback received regarding my work. I have composed for a variety of styles, including epic orchestral scenes, sweet and lighthearted stories, programmatic cartoon-like movements, and even eerie Tim Burton-esque moods.

I compose films to evoke emotion in the audience and have them leaving the theater (or whatever setting) feeling something sincere. If you hire me for your project, I'll make sure your audience will feel the same.

Interview with Mary Catherine Burns

  1. Q: What's your typical work process?

  2. A: Typically I begin my composing at the piano and decide the instrumentation for my piece early on. It depends on the type of project I am scoring, but after that, I move to my Logic DAW on my laptop and produce/edit my music there. To create clean and organized sheet music for live performances, I notate my pieces in Sibelius.

  3. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  4. A: My studio consists of my Studiologic Numa Compact 2 keyboard, my laptop and a dual monitor, my mic and external audio interface, and several instruments around including guitar, saxophone, ukulele, and some world instruments.

  5. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  6. A: Henry Mancini, James Horner, Michael Giacchino, Hans Zimmer, Alan Silvestri

  7. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  8. A: The most common type of work I do for my clients is composing instrumental scores for their film or animated project, although I have also worked on projects that involve songwriting.
