Interview with Brian "SB" Ramnarine

  1. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  2. A: Do you have Auto-Tune?....... Yes........

  3. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  4. A: Clients usually assume that we can take a poorly performed record, or poorly recorded, and turn it around. Which in some lucky cases you can, but in no way shape or form is that possible. Garbage In=Garbage Out...

  5. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  6. A: What are you looking for, what do you expect from myself, what are your aspirations?

  7. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  8. A: Make sure you are satisfied, and make sure material is of high standards technically.

  9. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  10. A: Laptop, Mic, Interface, Headphones, Notepad that comes with a pen, being that I'm only allowed five.

  11. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  12. A: Right out of school I interned at Electric Lady Studios for six months where I learned Invaluable lessons, and teachings from my professional counterparts... I met so many of my of my fav's such as Miguel, The-Dream, Bruno Mars, and Frank Ocean. I was allowed to sit-in on alot of sessions and did assistant work on Bruno's and various other local clients.

  13. Q: How would you describe your style?

  14. A: Mutable. I service the client above all.

  15. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  16. A: Frank Ocean definitely!!!, The Weeknd, Justin Bieber, PartyNextDoor, Ariana Grande, these artists provide a plethora of mix potential. Every mixers dream!!!!

  17. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  18. A: Please make sure it is recorded well!!!!!!!!!!! Do not move forward ever in this process unless material is at least of better than descent quality. The more well-recorded the material is, the better the mix.

Mixing engineers will tell you, they are able to hear a songs finish product before they even pull up a plug-in or patch in some hardware. And that is the same skill level that you will get from me.

  23. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  24. A: Quality,Innovation,Structure,Service

  25. Q: What's your typical work process?

  26. A: When Mixing a song that I have not tracked, I usually just like to listen, see what direction the song is trying to go for. First, organization of the session (Fades,Edits,Tempo), then I'll start panning, I spend a nice little chunk of time on that. Stereo field placement is very important. Adjust volumes according making note of leads, riffs, and sweet sections. Then I listen again...lol
