Carson nailed my project! I needed guitars tracked for a project and it came back sounding awesome and exactly what the song called for. Highly recommend him for your needs, couldn't be happier with the end result.

Interview with Carson Poncé

  1. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  2. A: I would say bring any form of an idea you have to me, even if its a voice memo on a phone, those can sometimes be the best. And if you have a sound or something your chasing let me know! We can get there 100%

  3. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  4. A: My custom Stratocaster, Gibson CL-30 Acoustic, UAD OX Box, Apollo Twin, and my Ampeg.

  5. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  6. A: I've been writing and recording since age 12, really bad sounding Garageband files but it excited me so much! There is no 'Plan B'

  7. Q: How would you describe your style?

  8. A: Fun and exciting. Even if its a sadder song I want you to be excited to be sad, haha.

  9. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  10. A: I would love to work with Dan Auerbach and Matt Shultz. Both create such unique sounds and write awesome hooks with killer melodies. They both do a great job of serving the song and finding what it needs. *Insert salt bae meme

  11. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  12. A: Don't overthink it, and commit early. I mentioned earlier but with all the options and things we have at our fingertips I think its easy to get bogged down and obsess over sounds and details that take away the original energy and inspiration of the song. Obviously you wanna nail that sound, but it can become a chore real quick if you don't commit and stay inspired.

  13. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  14. A: I've worked on a lot of indie rock and bedroom pop style stuff, but I love expanding sounds and skills I have into any type of genre. Recently have done some Americana type stuff, which can always be its on thing giving so much freedom and sounds to explore.

  15. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  16. A: I would say melodies, vocal or otherwise, and production. I love creating hooks and moments in a song, and nothing hits home harder than a killer melody or musical part in my mind.

  17. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  18. A: I've been writing and recording my own music since I was around 12, and played and toured over numerous years with bands. Outside of just being a creative person who writes songs or someone that has the skill to create parts, I take a lot of experiences and moments from life that inspire me and try to bring that energy into a project. A lot of things peak my curiosity and I think having an open mind to new things and experiences is valuable to writing and working on songs. Everything is possible and there are no bad ideas!

  19. Q: What's your typical work process?

  20. A: It will depend on the project or what I am being hired for, but typically it will first start with speaking to the client and hearing the song or the ideas they have. If its more ambiguous to what a client wants, then I will most likely start playing around with sounds and seeing what sounds inspiring for the project. Put in the work but then the magic happens somewhere in the work process.

  21. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  22. A: I'm running out of my home studio here in Nashville. I've got a beefed up Mac mini that I run with an Apollo Twin as well as a Focusrite OctoPre, which is such a workhorse for recording drums or multiple parts at once if needed. I work out of Universal Audio's Luna DAW which I find so creatively stimulating and really inspires me for a DAW. It's so easy but is crazy in-depth and detailed so you know it can complete a project hands down. UAD is always gonna bring you top of the line gear, and LUNA is no exception. I've been running a lot of guitars thru the UAD Ox Box I mentioned, and it is AMAZING. I can't get enough of it and the sounds I get are out of this world. I also have some Rupert Neve 500 Series Preamps and Compressors I adore. They just nail the sound and you get saturation and compression that is money every time.

  23. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  24. A: Butch Walker and Jack Antonoff are both up there for me. I think they both take the creative spark and run with it which is really where the magic can happen. I think we have so many ways now to nitpick and apple-z things that we can lose the first thing that inspired us, and for me both Butch and Jack allow the song to go anywhere and follow it down the road. They also both understand how to write a great song, which end of the day is where a hit is gonna start no matter what.

  25. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  26. A: As of late I've been working on a lot of guitar tracking and parts for clients. I love using my Universal Audio Ox Box because it sparks a lot of sounds and ideas inside the gear which is always fun. I also have been enjoying producing songs from demo to end. The creative process working with others has always been one of my favorite parts of music.
