William Smith on SoundBetter

Professional vocalist, songwriter, and producer with a unique grasp on modern music and how to write catchy songs.

Hi, my name is Will, and thanks so much for clicking on my profile!

I'm a songwriter, producer, and independent artist from London (UK) who specialises in writing catchy, radio-friendly songs and I'd love to help you with your next project!
Whilst I've sung for over 15 years and written my own songs for the past 7, my real talent lies in working with other artists and helping them take their songs to the next level.

I can write for and/or sing in any style you want: Hip-Hop, Pop, Rock, Metal, EDM, Classical/Jazz, Reggae, Soul, Disco. For examples of these, check out my SoundCloud playlist (under the 'more samples' menu).

The three things you can expect from working with me are communication, flexibility, and satisfaction.

If you're intrigued by what I have to offer, don't hesitate to drop me a message and we can discuss your next smash hit. I look forward to working with you!

I'd love to hear about your project. Click the 'Contact' button above to get in touch.

I had the pleasure of working with Will on an unusual song which required specialised attention beyong simply 'singing the notes'. Not only did Will deliver, but he surpassed all expectations. He delivered a brilliant result, all down to his talent! He has a wonderful voice and is great fun to work with, and he goes the extra mile. Thoroughly recommended!

Interview with William Smith

  1. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  2. A: My debut EP! It's coming out in June 2022 and I can't wait for everyone to hear it!

  3. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  4. A: Analogue but not in all cases. You don't need expensive analogue equipment to make radio-ready and successful music. The reason I still prefer analogue (even though I don't really own much) is the same reason I don't use a piano plugin and record the one I have at home. There's so much character in the imperfections.

  5. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  6. A: Q: Can I have a sample to see how your voice sounds? A: Yeah of course.

  7. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  8. A: Who is singing the song - me or someone else? Do you have lyrics for the song and what's your budget?

  9. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  10. A: Freddie Mercury, no explanation needed.

  11. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  12. A: In my opinion, melody (especially vocal melody) is defined by what it rhythmically offers to a song. It's a really important aspect to great melodies which is too frequently overlooked. Lyrics play into this a lot and when writing them, you need to factor in how the accents of each word and phrase interact with the arrangement and harmony of the song.

  13. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  14. A: Communication

  15. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  16. A: My ability to totally immerse myself in the emotion and energy of a song. I'm a melodically minded producer more than I am a top-line songwriter or singer. I feed off of the energy and emotion of a song (be it lyrics or instruments) and explain how it makes me feel through the rhythm, notes and vocal register I use. This allows me to work with and perform in any genre I'm given and consistently deliver melodies and performances which feel natural and work well with the song.

  17. Q: What's your typical work process?

  18. A: I humm until I get something I like, then I try and forget it, and if I can't then it's the one.

  19. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  20. A: I have two separate set-ups, at home and studio. At home, my room is acoustically treated, I sing into a RODE NT1-A microphone into a Steinberg UR-RT4 Audio interface (with Neve transformers) into Logic Pro X. This is where I record all of my melodies and instruments. To record my vocals, I rent a vocal booth in a studio to make use of the exceptionally well acoustically treated room and slightly better equipment. I mix my vocals using a blend of Logic's fantastic stock plug-ins and some premium 3rd Party plug-ins.

  21. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  22. A: If ever I feel creatively lost I turn to Jazz for inspiration. I feel like it hits a reset button in my mind and helps to bring my focus back to how the song should feel.

  23. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  24. A: Mainly vocal melodies and harmonies for other artists to sing tailored to sound best with their tone and voice

  25. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  26. A: You'll want to order again

  27. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  28. A: The freedom to push myself creatively and to work hard without it feeling like work.

  29. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  30. A: Not yet but I'm sure there will be. It's a website brimming with extraordinarily talented people!

  31. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  32. A: A Martin acoustic guitar (which I'd steal but no one would catch me if I was stranded on a desert island), 3 sets of strings and a portable audio recorder.

  33. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  34. A: Any and all (check out my examples!), but my background is in music written and performed by bands.
