Joseph Black on SoundBetter

Music to fit your project perfectly.

Based in London, UK, I write, produce, mix and master songs for artists and for TV/Film catalogues. Alongside working with artists, I am an In-House Producer for Hooksounds, a music library that works with large companies such as Google and Amazon.

By taking inspiration from many genres, in order to build my own sound, it has enabled me to acquire a wide variety of techniques needed for different styles. With this being said, I tend to lean towards creating more emotional sounding tracks with interesting soundscapes. I will always look to put authenticity first on your project and make it stand out from the rest, creating tracks that are unique to you.

Working under the label The Svnteen as an artist, producer, co-producer and ghost writer, I have gained all the attributes needed to work with clients and get the most out of tracks.

I'd love to hear about your project. Click the 'Contact' button above to get in touch.

Interview with Joseph Black

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: I mastered a track called 'Magnetic' for Phil Anker, which has achieved nearly 500,000 listens on Spotify. It is great to have so many ears listening to a project you were involved in.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: I am currently working on a studio album and EP for release this year, alongside a variety of co-production and audio engineering jobs.

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: Not as of yet, but I am always looking to collaborate and work with fellow providers.

  7. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  8. A: Being able to help bring a client's project to life with music. Completing any project as a creative is rewarding, so seeing someone achieve that is satisfying.

  9. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  10. A: Customers regularly ask what I recommend in terms of improving their music or project. I always provide a thorough initial deep-dive into each track and write a set of notes for the client.

  11. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  12. A: The biggest misconception about what I do as a Music Producer is that we cannot recreate a band right from the comfort of our own studio.

  13. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  14. A: - Guitar - Analog Synthesizer - Audio Interface - Computer - Microphone

  15. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  16. A: I like to mix the two, why settle just for one.

  17. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  18. A: I promise to never stop until your song/track is where it needs to be. Your satisfaction is the main priority as a producer.

  19. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  20. A: I always ask for the emotion they are trying to portray in their music, as it can speak a thousand words.

  21. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  22. A: Make sure you can relate emotionally to the music we produce, as how a track makes you feel is the main thing.

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: I have been producing now for 11 years. I started by one day messing around on FL Studio originally, and once I moved to Ableton, the rest was history.

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: I don't like to box myself in with genres, but it definitely is more of an Electronic style, with Ambient influences.

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: I would love to work with Tame Impala because the way he uses his voice in combination with the music is so unique.

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: Less is more, especially when it comes to the mix.

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: I tend to lean towards Electronic-based music. However, I have experience producing more organic and acoustic tracks as well.

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: I believe my strongest skill is coming up with multiple ideas quickly and then meshing the best of each until the track is where it needs to be. I also have a passion for sound design, in which I focus on experimenting with how the listener will perceive the music.

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: I bring creativity and an experimental view on music. I am not afraid to try different sounds and instruments and think outside the box when it comes to arranging and composing.

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: My typical work process consists of a number of different sessions. The first few sessions will be focused on creation and experimentation. Then followed by arrangement sessions, mixing sessions and finally mastering.

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: I have a professional home studio with analogue and digital hardware. I also create a lot of my music 'in the box' (using synths and instruments in the computer).

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: The biggest inspirations for me are Electronic artists such as Bonobo, Four Tet, Ross From Friends and Tame Impala.

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: I mostly produce full instrumentals for my clients, mix in their vocals and then mix and master the track to completion. I also have a lot of experience programming drum tracks for clients as well as remixing.
