Interview with Clay Woods

  1. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  2. A: Still new to the community so I cant recommend anyone personally.

  3. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  4. A: Currently digital because thats all I have access to and it's easy to travel with just a laptop. Analog, however, just has that unique sound to it!

  5. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  6. A: My promise is to give you a product that you're happy with and will be proud to share with the world.

  7. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  8. A: I love getting to create something new every time I work on a project. It's a lot of fun being able to find new sounds and samples to make something unique for that client.

  9. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  10. A: Can you provide reference tracks that will help me better understand the vision?

  11. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  12. A: Have a vision for what you want to accomplish with your song, but keep an open mind about the production and sounds.

  13. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  14. A: Laptop, headphones, and midi keyboard.

  15. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  16. A: I was originally an engineer for an automotive company but have always wanted to produce music full time. When music started paying the bills I quit my day job and started producing full time.

  17. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  18. A: Keep It Simple!

  19. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  20. A: I typically work on pop or hip hop productions.

  21. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  22. A: My strongest skill is writing quickly and creating unique melodies with unique sounds.

  23. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  24. A: I always aim to produce a song that is structured well and easily listenable, but I am always looking for unique sounds and samples to set it apart from the typical "radio ready" song.

  25. Q: What's your typical work process?

  26. A: Writers usually come to me with lyrics they've written or a melody, and I create an entire track around their concept.

  27. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  28. A: My studio is minimal since I mainly produce music for others. I use a 2019 MacBook Pro 16", Scarllet 8i6 interface, Yamaha HS8 Monitors. I work in Ableton and have access to professional software like Izotope and Antares Autotune.

  29. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  30. A: Grey, Skrillex, Party Favor, Benny Blanco, almost any hip hop producer.

  31. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  32. A: I mainly work to help artists visions come to life. Usually a singer/writer comes to me to put a production to the lyrics they have written.
