SAMANTHA SCHULTZ on SoundBetter

I'm a Berklee College of Music graduate with 11+ years experience in both the American & Canadian music industry combined. I've been playing advanced rhythm guitar & writing songs for 13 years, & have been a professional demo singer for approx. 3 years. I have years of experience in live performance settings in multiple different genres of music.

Schultz embodies an acoustic pop-soul sound, reminiscent of Sara Bareilles & a folky Tori Kelly. She has had many opportunities to showcase her abilities by entering talent competitions & playing at open stages and folk clubs. Samantha has performed at numerous music festivals across Canada. She has played festivals alongside the likes of Serena Ryder and Jennifer Warnes. Samantha has opened for artist such as John Blackwell (drummer for Justin Timberlake P-Diddy), Ryan Cabrera, Livingston Taylor, and Ben Taylor. A multi-award nominated artist since she was 14 years old, Schultz has released 2 independent albums. She received a full-ride scholarship to Berklee College of Music and became a beloved favorite over the 4 year program. During her time there, she did extensive performing both individually & as a member of the award-winning acappella group, Pitch Slapped. Samantha has travelled to Europe, the Middle East, & all over North America for musical festivals & residencies. Her latest claim-to-fame was being a featured singer & model in COVERGIRL's Pitch Perfect 2 campaign, where she was featured globally as "The Spitfire." She is currently a regular session singer & writer, pitching for local & global ads (Coca-Cola, Hasbro, Westside Rentals, Disney, etc.), and for TV and film. Schultz also performs regularly with various live entertainment groups around Southern California.

Interview with SAMANTHA SCHULTZ

  1. Q: How would you describe your style?

  2. A: My style could probably be describe as "singer-songwriter acoustic soul." I've tried my best to find the balance between folk, jazz, R&B/gospel, and pop, and I believe that this is a pretty good description of what I do.

  3. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  4. A: I love that music IS my job in the first place! I know it's not always the easiest choice in career and that you struggle from time to time, but there's something so incredible about what music does for the world and its people. In a perfect world, there would be less music business and music creation, but that's what we've got at the moment and you have to make the best of it. I would never change my journey through music for anything.

  5. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  6. A: I think the biggest misconception about what I do is that I look like a stereotype at first sight: I'm a singer-songwriter who can't actually PLAY guitar. I know that there is a bad rep for chicks who play guitar, sing, and write songs, but I love the look on peoples' faces when I get on stage and completely shed that stereotype. I take pride in the fact that I can absolutely hold my own on guitar and it's something that I try to get better at all the time so I can remove myself further from that stereotype.

  7. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  8. A: I've been performing all my life! I sang in choirs and talent competitions in elementary school, and began taking singing lessons at the age of 9. I started guitar lessons and writing songs at age 11. I stopped taking lessons due to scheduling conflicts and was pretty much self-taught for the next 7-8 years. I was hired for my first professional gig opening for a folk artist at 13 for a room of 600 people, and from then on out, I was performing as a folk singer-songwriter all over Canada. I regularly played folk music festivals throughout my teens, released albums, and was nominated for various awards. I attended Berklee College of Music from 2009-2013, where I grew a TON, personally and musically, and got to be a part of some incredibly cool experiences - none that I would've even been able to touch if I hadn't gotten my scholarship there. After Berklee, I moved right out to Los Angeles and have been working here professionally for the last 2.5 years as a session singer and as a live performer with various gigging groups.

  9. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  10. A: As I'm getting older and the more music styles I learn about or get exposed to, the more I absolutely adore 90s R&B. I've recently been listening to a lot of Babyface over the last year or so, and he was a total hit maker. He's recently bridged the generation gap by starting to produce younger artists (like Ariana Grande), but I'd really love to see what his songwriting process is and how he comes up with his chord progressions. There's something that really gets me when it comes to 90s R&B ballads especially and he totally rocked those!!

  11. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  12. A: The music I usually work on is anything acoustic with vocals and lots of harmonies when it comes to a performance setting; that stems from my bringing up in the folk community back home. When it comes to a studio setting, I usually work on more pop-oriented, catchy tunes.

  13. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  14. A: In the studio, I bring incredible ability to take direction. I love studio session work because it's like a big puzzle - and I love puzzles. It is always my goal to nail it the first time, and I work efficiently and quickly. In live performance settings, I have the ability to completely and totally embody the song I am singing. I feel that believable performances are very far and few these days, and being able to sing the notes is only half of it. I know I have the ability to take on whatever story is within a song and make you believe that I'm singing from the depths of my heart and soul. I also love to bring a cool, acoustic vibe to a live performance setting, and I think it's a pretty cool thing to be a chick guitar player that can definitely hold her own!

  15. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  16. A: I love artists that truly make you feel something, either through a stellar performance or through emotional lyrics. I grew up listening to everything and anything, but when I began learning how to play guitar and how to songwrite, India.Arie and Sheryl Crow were among some of my favorites. I was very lucky to also grow up in a folk music community back in my hometown, so I learned a lot about the importance of story-telling and song-sharing. Going to college introduced jazz and R&B/gospel into my life, and Los Angeles has been teaching me the importance of understanding how to construct a pop song. I am open to hearing any new music because I think it's highly important for musicians to understand that there is good music of every genre. You never know which song is going to make the difference in someone's day.

  17. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  18. A: I most commonly am a session singer, and a live performer (singing and guitar). I am very comfortable with writing top line melodies, and will write songs for TV commercials.
