Interview with Jenny Chapin

  1. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  2. A: -cut vocals for pre written songs -topline

  3. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  4. A: yes, I know Ellee Duke and Bobby Crane very well, and would recommend them both to my clients.

  5. Q: How would you describe your style?

  6. A: Honest Pop

  7. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  8. A: I would love to work with Clean Bandit: Every song/collaboration they have released I have been obsessed with. I love their production and everything about their music JP Saxe: I would love to duet with him on a track- I just love his tone & the honestly and realness that comes out in his music Julia Michaels: Absolutely love her writing style- I would be honored to be able to collaboratively write with her or even just cut one of her tracks

  9. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  10. A: I do mostly Pop music- being either dance pop, chill pop, country pop, indie pop, and EDM.

  11. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  12. A: I think other people would say my strongest skill is my tone. However, I would say my strongest skill is my ability to connect with the lyrics of a song (whether it be my own, or someone elses), and how I deliver the vocal.

  13. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  14. A: For starters, I approach every song as if it were my own, and I would be releasing it under my catalogue. I put 100% into every project I work on and give it my all. When recording, I think it is really important to connect with a song emotionally. I think being able to make your listeners connect, will always have a much stronger impact then someone who is just trying to sound good.

  15. Q: What's your typical work process?

  16. A: Obviously my process will change depending on what I am doing for each project, however, I tend to work In this order: If I am writing a song from scratch, I always lay down melodies first, then once those are set, I will start writing. I try to finish melodies and writing all in one sitting, and then track a quick demo. I then take a little break, and come back and record the final vocal. If I am just recording vocals for someone else's song, I like to sit with it for about a day, or at minimum a few hours, and really get used to the timing, and memorize all the lyrics, so I can record it without having to read it, and so it comes out as naturally as possible.

  17. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  18. A: I have 2 studios at my home. So I choose the studio I will be recording in depending on what mic I think will sound best for the project. In one studio I have a Neumann TLM103 mic with a Universal audio LA 610 MKii. In the other studio I have a Shure Sm7B mic with a cloudlifter. I use Apogee interfaces in both studios, and I work on Mac computers with Logic Pro X.
