Tapelab on SoundBetter

The most common thing on our mind is 'production all the way'. For every inch of production - pop / rock / dance - we have got an instant solution; from recording, complete backing track programming, delivering tracks for theatre/films/games, finishing up tracks, anything about vocals to mixing.

/// ABOUT ///

Tapelab is the project studio of Mintzkov synth-wizard / Part Time Punks’ producer Pascal Oorts. It’s the place to be for creative developers who consider music production and practice-oriented music courses.

/// MUSIC PRODUCTION ///

You have got an idea but you don't know what to do with it? Tapelab is your counsellor!
Back track programming, pre-production, production, recording, editing and mixdown…you name it, we do it.

For production and mixing our partners in crime are Logic Pro or Ableton Live (the choice is yours), completed with an overload of plug-ins and a large amount of outboard gear.

Fancy a genuine or modern synth-sound? Just ask. Here at Tapelab we have got vintage as well as new synths, even the very latest soft synths, with a sample library stuffed with sounds, beats, bleeps and the occasional grunt.

Tapelab can add any combination off the following skills to your project:
- Music Production
- Sounddesign
- Synth Programming
- Composition
- Arrangements
- Audio Engineering (Recording - Mixing - Mastering)
- Live Musician

Interview with Tapelab

  1. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  2. A: I'm producing 4 tracks for a synth pop band.

  3. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  4. A: Both. Why? That's a ridiculous discussion. Just use yours ears...If it sounds good, then it's good. It doesn't matter if it's digital or analog.

  5. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  6. A: I'll aim for the legs and hit the heart.

  7. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  8. A: Everything.

  9. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  10. A: That we just press buttons and the computer will do the rest. Think again.

  11. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  12. A: What's your song about? What's your inspiration?

  13. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  14. A: Roland Space Echo, Moog Voyager, Ableton Push, Sansamp PSA-1, Arp Odyssey

  15. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  16. A: I started as a musician playing keyboards, drums and bass guitar but there was always a big intrest in recording gear and methods. I played in several bands as a keyboard player but these days I'm more focused on the production, recording and mixing of music.

  17. Q: How would you describe your style?

  18. A: My style is blending digital and analog sounds. The computer is a fantastic tool but I believe that the best music comes from a musician playing an instrument and using it to compose a melody and harmony. Once you get this right, you can add whatever you want just by using a computer, but it will have more depth then starting a track by twisting knobs on a computer screen. During the production process I add acoustic and electronic instruments, so there's a balance between computer-sounds and organic sounds. I like the combination of computer/electronic sounds and my human interaction as a producer by tweaking and recording acoustic sounds.

  19. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  20. A: I would like to work with musicians who make delicious blends between electronic music and rock. And 'recording a Soul band' is another favorite on my Bucket List.

  21. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  22. A: Yes! Try cutting the low frequencies in the sides of your mix. Works everytime!

  23. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  24. A: Rock, Pop and Electronic Music.

  25. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  26. A: Programming Synth Sounds and Mixing

  27. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  28. A: I want to aim for the legs and hit the heart. I'll use anything I've got to reach this goal.

  29. Q: What's your typical work process?

  30. A: A Tapelab session... 1. Check the song structure, chords and melodies and see if we can get them to the next level 2. Programming beats and synth sounds and/or recording acoustic instruments 3. Make a basic mix so we can start recording vocals. 4. Recording and Editing the vocals and adjust the song to the vocals. 5. Finish the mix 6. Have some coffee.

  31. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  32. A: Phil Spector, Paul Epworth, Jagz Kooner, ...

  33. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  34. A: The most common thing on our mind is 'production all the way'. For every inch of production - pop / rock / dance - we have got an instant solution; from recording, complete backing track programming, delivering tracks for theatre/films/games, finishing up tracks, anything about vocals to mixing.
