Interview with Stefano Lentini
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I learned from Alan Meyerson and Geoff Foster at AIR Studios that digital and analog work together. It all depends on your ear and your direction. My setup starts with a Mac Pro 6 Core, I am a Metric Halo endorser and I have 2 Lio 8 connected to a unique handmade Mastering Summing Mixer with two handmade controllers unique in the world crafted by Italian engineer Livio Argentini. I mainly work with ADAM S3XH, Dynaudio M1 with two different Dynaudio power amplifiers and B&W DM1800. My studio is a circus of musical instruments, always in development.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I started out working as an assistant in a recording studio twenty years ago. Then I bought an Apple G3 I never left the studio for months.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I am inspired by all those who make music with their heads, who tell a true, personal and profound story. I love independence in music, I believe it is a revolutionary value. I'm a fan of Chopin, Metallica, Alicia Keys, Alt-J, Antony and the Johnsons, Villagers, Efterklang, Muse, John Grant...
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: My "Stabat Mater" is a part of the soundtrack of the film nominated for two Academy Awards "The Grandmaster" by Wong Kar Wai. The album was composed, recorded, mixed and mastered by me. I am very proud of this project as it was born from an intense and profound work done with the Spanish singer Sandra Pastrana. Wong Kar-Wai listened to some tracks and fell in love with them. A collaboration that led me to sign the music for the latest short film curated by Antony Vaccarello and produced by WKW for Yves Saint Laurent: Self05
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I'm mastering the soundtrack of a 12 episode TV series: "The Sea Beyond" produced by Rai Fiction and worldwide distributed by Studiocanal. It's a huge project that includes Rap, symphonic, world and classical music. I was able to work once again with great musicians and orchestras such as the RAI National Symphonic Orchestra and Gilda Buttà, the pianist known worldwide for "The Untouchables" by Brian De Palma and "The Legendo of 1900" by Tornatore.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: My experience.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: Music speaks
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: You must know what you can get from your collaborators, your collaborators must always be better than you.
Q: How would you describe your style?
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: The beauty of the instrument, the beauty of the performance and the beauty of the recording room.
