Rie Sinclair

Music Producer and Songwriter

Rie Sinclair on SoundBetter

Emmy-Nominated Songwriter and Producer, with thousands of syncs in TV/Film. Montages for Primetime, End Credits for film, A Theme for MTV. Now in the UK after 20 years in LA.

Music Production, Editing, Recording, Vocal and V.O. Production, Composition & Songwriting. I work in Pro Tools and Abelton Live. Find me in London, LA or Liverpool.

Songwriting for ABC/Disney since 2004. The 'Voice' of the song is everything: I am intense about crafting lyrics and melodies to their potential, dedicated to gorgeous vocal production (edit, comp, align and Auto-Tune) and sound design. I love working layering with analogue synths and field recordings.

As a day job, I make music for 2 Major Network Daytime Dramas in the US and run a boutique sync library.

If I don't get back immediately, I might be deep in production :)

Interview with Rie Sinclair

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: I really loved building the production for Mysterium which is up on Spotify. But I am quite proud of everything I've worked on for sync (please see IMDb)

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: I'm always producing music for sync.

  5. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  6. A: A small guitar with magical strings that never age. A potato plantation to power a recording device. Two microphones - a hydrophone and a geophone. A celeste (because why not). And something ridiculous to modulate and delay all sounds (also powered by my potatoes).

  7. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  8. A: Q. How do I get a sync? A. It's an industry of relationships and making music that fits.

  9. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  10. A: Brian Eno... I'm sure I have a list somewhere.

  11. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  12. A: Lea Cappelli (L'freaq)

  13. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  14. A: Both. Record it in at quality with tone, light EQ and FX. Mix down and boost to level. Stereo out for final mix down processing.

  15. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  16. A: I don't believe in promises. I express what I can and won't do. Follow through is crucial to this industry and I'm obsessed with closure so that's easy for me.

  17. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  18. A: That I can explore sound like a day at the aquarium.

  19. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  20. A: I'm not telepathic. Unfortunately :)

  21. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  22. A: I literally fell into making music like falling into Wonderland. I've been making music professionally since 2004.

  23. Q: How would you describe your style?

  24. A: My personal art is a bit of dark melodic pop. However, the music I create for TV spans a range of eclectic, ethereal ambient to singer-songwriter to pop.

  25. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  26. A: Aurora. Who wouldn't!

  27. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  28. A: Maybe.

  29. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  30. A: Dark melodic pop, new-wave, ambient chill, downtempo, singer-songwriter, pop, rock.

  31. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  32. A: My wicked imagination.

  33. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  34. A: If it's a co-write, the arrangement, the overlooked details, the sub-conscious elements, the poetic bit that says what needs to be said without saying it. I write songs top down: intro to exit, melody and lyrics.

  35. Q: What's your typical work process?

  36. A: I'm not sure I have one?

  37. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  38. A: I have a few pedal boards, some nice mics, some outboard pre's and compressors (Neve, SSL, Electrodyne, Tonelux), an Apollo Twin, a few Macs. I work in Ableton Live and Pro Tools.

  39. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  40. A: Music for sync.
