From concept to single, ideas to albums, beats , arrangements, melody and harmony....
....I love to write, create and capture the (sometimes) hidden magic in your work.

Matt provided amazing sounding drum tracks with excellent content and cool touches of originality.

I have worked with quite a few drummers in the past 10 years and Matt’s sound definitely stands up with any of the top tracks that I have received.

I discovered Matt's Future Primate Studio on a friends recommendation and have been finishing my new album with him, recording live drums [drummer's happy-a good omen] and doing a ton of edits, new guitars for old, percussion and fine tuning arrangements. The studio is spacious and well equipped, you can easily fit a band into the live room, the control room likewise. Matt pays great attention to detail in the mixing process whilst recognising the need to complete projects within any given time frame/budget. I'm really pleased with the results so far and would most certainly recommend.VP

My old touring band worked with Matt a number of times over the years. He always made my drums sound fantastic (not to mention the rest of the band!) and was such good company offstage too. Great ear, great hang, very professional!

My name is Mark Decloedt, former drummer of the UK band EMF. I have worked in A&R & Marketing for TAMA & Pearl Drums. I’ve been lucky enough to know Matt for over 20 years now and I can honestly say if I need any help or advice on anything regarding recording in the studio or live Matt is my go to guy. His level of expertise & knowledge is boundless. His work rate is like no other I’ve met in this industry, but most importantly it’s his passion & love for the music business that is so infectious and a joy to be around. There’s not a hurdle he won’t climb for you.

I’ve shared a stage or two with Matt a few years back when I was touring internationally with a band. His personality is great! Very professional and approachable! Not to mention he’s also a great drummer!

We have currently been using Matt as our FOH sound engineer when we came across him as a house engineer in a venue we played. He was outstanding and we always commented about him many months after the show. We had a tour booked and decided Matt would be a great fit for the tour, as it turned out he was. Great attention to EQ and made the entire sound of the drums and back line sing with such power and presence. A very well organised engineer and was a thorough joy to work with. Very professional on and off the stage.

Interview with Matt Culpepper-Future Primate

  1. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  2. A: Ethan Cronin

  3. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  4. A: Q. How long will it take to make a record? A. Records can be made in minutes and last a lifetime, records can take a lifetime to record but only last minutes, the ambiguity is not there as a trip hazard but based on my experience of the industry.

  5. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  6. A: The only genre I have not completed any projects on is opera, I did do a live session at Glyndebourne many years ago but not commercially, I love working across all styles, keeps it fresh.

  7. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  8. A: The last big commercial project was a live Blu Ray Anniversary Concert for the band EMF in which I was responsible for the live stage sound, audio capture and subsequent editing and production mixes of the audio for the Blu Ray/DVD release.

  9. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  10. A: Finalising the studio build, writing whilst touring as a live sound engineer.

  11. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  12. A: Both are great, I combined the best of the best of both worlds.

  13. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  14. A: To extract and deliver the very best they can offer with patience, compassion and excitement,

  15. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  16. A: Continual variance and when it makes the hairs stand up on the back of my neck and change your life forever.

  17. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  18. A: The Glamour 🤓

  19. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  20. A: What is your motivation for the project, album, single, career path...?

  21. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  22. A: Keep an open mind with any collaborative process, listen to ideas....then let the music speak.

  23. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  24. A: Piano/keyboard, bass guitar, 8 trackrecorder, a 🎤 and 🎧

  25. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  26. A: ..I always wanted to do something, started out as a drummer in bands, progressed into production in the live area, then found myself working out of studios as a session drummer..naturally progressed into engineering and production.

  27. Q: How would you describe your style?

  28. A: Quirky but commercial.

  29. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  30. A: Quincy Jones, I have admired his work and breadth of styles he has nailed.

  31. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  32. A: ...tough question.... but less is invariably more...think about the song not ‘your’ part.

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: Passionate about music.

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: I am less afraid to make mix choices and arrangement decisions than someone who can be ‘too’ involved in the project. This is not to kill their idea’s, but to allow the songs to breathe, having been fortunate to have worked alongside some world renowned producers and artists, over the years has given me a wide breadth of knowledge in this play.

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: When writing, I tend to work quite quickly at the on set of an idea, sketching the bones of a composition, for me this keeps the ideas fresh and the inspiration snappy. When working with clients, I like to prepare in advance of the project, listening to demos of the band or artist, where possible I will take in a live show of the artists performance to gain better perspective of the raw product so as not to detract from their overall proposition, using their liege inspiration to engage and enhance their final product. Also handy to get ideas from the band to put in the pot, other artists they aspire too, things like that.

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: The studio consists of 3 main areas, the control room is isolated from the live room and measures approximately 25 Sqm with natural daylight to enjoy, the heart of the system is a Vintage 40 channel Midas XL3 and meter bridge, the studio is connected via Mogami and van damme to Universal Audio Apollo 16 and Focusrite converters. I am a Mac based studio and use Logic and Pro-Tools as my daily drivers depending on what the project involves but will happily work in other DAW’s. I have a wide range of software synths and plug ins as well as a few hardware synths. I have multiple near and mid field monitoring from Dynaudio, Yamaha and JBL. The Live Room is approximately 50 Sqm and also benefits from natural daylight, sounds great to record in. The Vocal Booth continues the theme of natural daylight and measures approximately 7.5 Sqm. Microphones include Townsend Lab Sphere modelling mic, Sennheiser, Audio Technica AE range, thru to vintage Reslo, Biscuit & Ball. All cabling and connections are Van Damme, Kelsey and Mogami using Neutrik plugs.

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: I enjoy many genres and styles, but stand out musicians for me would have to include, Peter Gabriel, David Bowie, Dave Grohl, Calvin Harris, Don Broco, The 1975, and Lower Than Atlantis. Producers would have to include, Quincy Jones, Trevor Horn, Hugh Padgnam, Bob Clearmountain.

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: I am currently managing live audio services for bands, more recently when I am not touring, I have built a studio and production suite to enable me to write music and record artists again. I have also recently completed several soundtracks and advertising music projects.
