Juan Carrizo on SoundBetter

I´ve worked with two Grammy winning producers, toured Latin America, Europe and Middle East. I played (and still do) the big stages. I love working in music from different genres and bringing rock and metal to any song.

I´m an always on the move musician. Guitarist, multi instrumentalist and live looping artist. I compose, arrange, record and produce my own music -and love doing all that for others fellow artists (musicians or not)-

I´m proud member of Anna Fiori in México, ZiX in Lebanon, Volkruna in Argentina, Miasma Theory in USA among other musical collaborations such as with Corina Lawrence, Macuarro, Aghora Sadhus, Toro, Soza, Pleamar and Cause.

Besides my musical background, I have degrees in both sound post production and filmmaking so I have a pretty good big picture of how things are supposed to sound. For more than seven years, I´ve been working side by side with other artists as a producer, giving my -mostly rocker- input in their projects.

Interview with Juan Carrizo

Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: The first and second albums from ZiX (first with Pure Stee Germany and second with Universal) and the one we are recording now. It´s always a big and rewarding challenge to put everyone on the same track and get an album done with musicians in Argentina, Mexico, USA, Lebanon and Greece
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: 2021 was full of collaborations. I´m working on making an album out of them. Designing new sounds for my "dada" livelooping solo improv-visual show. Recording new ZiX Album. Rehearsing new Anna Fiori´s songs. Surviving a pandemic :p
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: Koni Buenaventura is an exceptional producer and mixing engineer, an artist too!
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: What is it that you are trying to communicate/emotion to relate to with this piece?
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: An acoustic guitar, an iPod classic, a solar panel, a small recorder and a hamaca :p
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: Guitar player since 1999, professionally from 2005 to date. Studying different genres and instruments since then. Audiovisuals degree (films and TV) in 2006, sound post pro degree (2014). Mix and recording with Alan Parsons. Improvisation with Gary Burton. Collaborating with other artists (musician or not) since forever.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: Regarding music arrangement I like taking a little chat with the songwriter to get some insights of the mood. The listen to the song and start working, listening to references if any and off to record, send for revision, fixing and printing.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: Right now I´m moving a lot so I´m working mostly with my Gibson Les Paul and Takamine acoustic, an Apogee One interface, a Radial DI box and headphones. Whenever I need more I have a couple of great studios with tons of amps and guitars for me (and your music) to enjoy :)
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Stravins-Rock-Vai-ish
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Somebody has an idea for a song but lacks the skills to complete it musically. OR an artist have a full piece and needs guitars (electric or not or actually not a guitar at all but something with strings like a banjo or a mandolin).
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: There is ALWAYS a lead (lyric or no) that´s the one carrying the song -they might change over time-. Whenever in doubt, listen to that and just follow. Inspiration will come sooner or later
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Guthrie Govan, Danny Elfman, Hans Zimmer, Steven Wilson -as producer-, Wes Anderson.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I´m inbetween two worlds right now. Symphonic Metal in one hand and pop/rock/folk in the other.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: Mostly rock and very often space. I´m a big fan of spread triads and long intervals.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: To get to work with other artists and their visions of the world
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: Being a guitar player is NOT just shredding around -even when that´s quite enjoyable-
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Get and artistic and personal connection. The technical stuff is out there. A shared passion is what you need.

A: Commitment to music as a language and the uniqueness of arts.
