Interview with Julen Larrañaga aka FEZE

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: LEVI'S music project Spain. I was part of the producer group creating a song for a showcase we made in June of 2019.

  3. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  4. A: I have recommended sound better to my professional colleagues but they are still thinking about to open the account.

  5. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  6. A: Do you think you can do it? YES

  7. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  8. A: - Do you have any reference songs? - Do you have a demo I can hear to? - What are you exactly looking for?

  9. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  10. A: I basically started like all kids, downloading a DAW in my home PC and experimenting. At some point, after 2 years I really improved and released my first song with a record label (Clutch Records - Future House & Deep) and achieved 2 million plays on a bootleg I made (Robin Schulz - OK Julen Larra Remix). At that point, I knew I wanted to professionalize and work in the music industry so I went to Solent University to study "Popular Music Production" bachelor degree. In those three years, I collaborated with various independent artist, LEVI'S, Warner Chappel Spain, Universal Music Spain ... In my third year of uni, I really started thinking that even that I had a lot of experience and achieved collaborations with big companies, having a regular income in music is really hard so I started working more and more, contacting people everywhere to work till Gozzi Records hired me as a music producer and mixing and mastering engineer (they met me thanks to Soundbetter so, thanks ❤). Right now I'm working with Gozzi Records, working with independent artists as a freelancer and doing projects in Soundbetter also as a freelancer.

  11. Q: How would you describe your style?

  12. A: I don't have, I always like new challenges but lately I'm working a lot on the urban style. Reggaeton, Trap, Afrobeat, Afroswing, ...

  13. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  14. A: Right now I have a really basic studio setup since a lot of hardware and synths have almost exact replicas in VST. Pair of Adam T7V, Audio Technical at2020, audient soundcard, acoustic foam, a lot of cables, guitar, midi controller, ... Nothing special but effective.

  15. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  16. A: I'm producing for couple independent artist (VICCO, Clara Rueda, Haidro), for label (delirics) signing artist Hummuskid a.k.a UMUS, helping Warner Chappell composers with the composition and production and mixing and mastering all kind of tracks.

  17. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  18. A: Digital. It brings much more opportunities to mess with the audio and create never heard sounds. And you can always emulate analog harmonic distortion or hardware reaction with VST emulations (which I have tried and compare and sounds almost identical)

  19. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  20. A: 100% refund if they are not satisfied (Never happened yet)

  21. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  22. A: Being able to listen to music all-day

  23. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  24. A: If you don't have hardware you are not a real producer. - Finneas O'connell, Grammy Winner of "Record of the Year" and "Song of the Year" with "Bad Guy", "Album of the Year" and "Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical" with "When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?" and "Producer of the Year, Non-Classical". All this was done on a BEDROOM, with almost no hardware.

  25. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  26. A: Build a mutual trust relationship.

  27. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  28. A: Laptop, USB sound card, Speakers, mic and a solar panel to power everything.

  29. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  30. A: DENO. I discovered the UK music scene thanks to him and I love his voice. I would really love to work with him on a track.

  31. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  32. A: Break the rules and think out of the box. I have been to uni, read books, online courses ... that's great for the basic knowledge but you have to sometimes do things wrong to create something special or different. Sometimes would sound horrendous but other times would sound AMAZING. If you don't experiment you will sound like everyone.

  33. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  34. A: I work on a lot of EDM, Trap, Reggaeton, Afroswing, Dancehall, Hip-Hop and POP. I sometimes work with Rock, Punk and Country.

  35. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  36. A: Versatility and receptiveness to feedback. Apart from working in various styles (EDM, urban, POP, Rock, ...) I always try to send the projects to my industry friends and tell them If they would have approached the mix, mastering, production, remix, ... from another perspective or if they would have changed something so I can learn from their experience.

  37. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  38. A: In terms of composition and production, I bring different ideas. I have listened to a lot of different genres during my life and that's why I think my music and productions have something different because there are tons of little influences on each piece. If it's a mix or mastering I bring the pro studio quality on a much affordable price since I'm always moving and I don't have my own studio. If I need to record something, add analogue harmonic distortion to STEMS, use specific hardware to have a specific sound, ... I reach to my contacts or rent studio for one day and get everything I need to be done.

  39. Q: What's your typical work process?

  40. A: I first have a chat with the client. If it's a production, mix or mastering, style, the sound they want to achieve, ... Then I work on the project and send demos as I work on it. Finally, I send the final demo version and after revisions and changes, I send the final product.

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: I think as a producer you need to innovate all the time so I tried to listen as much as different music as I can and If it's completely out of the genre I'm producing, mixing or mastering even better because I can learn new things that I can apply to my client projects. Right now I'm listening to a lot of '80s/'90s Spanish punk (Eskorbuto, RIP, Extremoduro, ...), UK afroswing/afrobeat (Deno, Kojo Funds, Wizkid, ...) and some USA new trap talents, especially Lil Tecca.

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: The most common type of work would be the beat creation. A lot of people is reaching to me (especially reggaeton new artists now that is becoming so popular) asking for new/fresh sounds. Apart from that I also mix and master a lot of POP, EDM and urban music mainly.
