Interview with Mathew Vaughan
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: At the moment I'm working on developing my own company as its director and chief executive officer to provide a wide array of audio services.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Analogue although these days digital has a bit of an upper hand. I have a ton of experience working with analogue gear by Rupert Neve Designs, Solid State Logic, Focusrite and many other manufacturers. The truth is, compared with the latest plugin emulations which I have available to me on the Universal Audio and Plugin Alliance platforms, there's effectively no audible difference. The only difference is that this enables me to complete work quicker, at the same or higher quality than analogue.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: If you don't like my work, you will have a full refund.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: The flexibility and ability to work with young and aspiring artists and talent. Not to mention being able to listen to the latest tracks by up and coming artists prior to release, that's fun.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: How long will it take? It can depend on each project although usually for a mix, 5 days maximum and for a master 48 hours maximum. *Revisions may mean these processes take longer to complete.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Look for someone who is meticulous and provides honest work. Contact a provider like myself to discuss the work for free and without any obligation.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I have been doing 'this' for nearly a decade non-professionally and for around 5 years professionally.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Clear, transparent, transient, wide and deep.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Don't over-think it.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Electronic music, mostly Bass House, but really dig Techno and Pop too.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: In my opinion I don't know. I like to think I'm good at everything I do. But I'd say maybe mixing is my strong point.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: The quality.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: We will first discuss the job and what needs to be done; creating and setting objectives and deadlines.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I run a 2017 MacBook Pro with Ableton Live 10 and sometimes Logic Pro X, and have experience in using Pro Tools. For monitoring I primarily use Yamaha HS7 monitors, and have access to use Dynaudio and Genelec monitors. I also run the Arrow interface by Universal Audio including a suite of their plug-ins that are used by many industry professionals.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Tiësto inspires me a lot with how dynamic their music is. He can release a bass house track and then the next day release a pop chart topper. I also get inspired by a lot of up and coming and underground artists who do things differently.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Audio mastering.
