Thomas Bryan Eaton on SoundBetter

Greetings! Even more than a musician, I'm a music lover. I've spent my life listening to, studying, playing and creating music. Most of my time is divided between touring and recording with my own project, as well as my regular bands (Miss Tess, Western Centuries), and session work here in Nashville. I spend as much time as I can in my home studio!

As a lifelong music devotee, I have deep knowledge and experience that only comes with time. Starting on piano as a young lad, I quickly picked up the guitar, bass and drums. Still searching for more sounds, I found mandolin and quickly became enamored with the pedal steel. I love weaving melodies into the sonic tapestry of a song.

Beyond playing instruments, I've always loved singing and creating new music; not only writing, but arranging, recording & producing.

While I've always been a sonic explorer searching for fresh sounds and enjoy getting weird (sometimes really weird!), I also love the time honored musical traditions we have: especially classic country, jazz, blues and rock 'n' roll. I find great pleasure in "playing it straight" within the proper context as well.

All this meaning I'm more than capable and experienced with bringing a whole production together in a wide variety of genres, playing tasty leads, helping write lyrics or just adding a secondary rhythm guitar part that makes the recording pop.

Remote recording can cause interesting challenges, but I've been handling them for over 15 years now! For me, clear communication is always a top priority.

Overall, I love making music I'm proud of and would love to help you make music you're proud of. Let's get to it!

I'd love to hear about your project. Click the 'Contact' button above to get in touch.

I’ve worked with Thomas in countless settings for over a decade at this point and he never ceases to amaze me. He’s extremely talented on multiple instruments, and everything he plays oozes musicality and always elevates the music beyond what I could imagine. You’ll never go wrong getting Thomas on your project!

Interview with Thomas Bryan Eaton

  1. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  2. A: American music of all stripes.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: Finishing up mixes on a new EP of my own, and releasing two albums I co-produced and played a mess of stuff on. One with Miss Tess and one with Western Centuries.

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: Aaron Shafer-Haiss

  7. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  8. A: Clear communication is of the utmost importance!

  9. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  10. A: I've been making music and recordings as long as I can remember! Staring with an old walkman I could record myself onto. Professionally, I've been doing all of these things for 20 years about.

  11. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  12. A: Remember to zoom in on the specifics, but also zoom out on the song and/or the project. Making records is about constantly shifting those perspectives.

  13. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  14. A: Melodic interpretation and improvisation

  15. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  16. A: Lot's of experience.

  17. Q: What's your typical work process?

  18. A: First, listening all the way through with an open mind, always. Second listen, letting my imagination fill gaps if I find them. Then I start getting my hands dirty! If it's an instrumental overdub, I'll normally play 3 passes, then listen to what I have. Often I have it by then with a little comping (or not!!), but sometimes I'll go back and work on specific sections. Overall for tracking, I try to keep an analog mindset in a digital environment.

  19. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  20. A: Too many to list... just about everybody!

  21. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  22. A: Either full on production or flying in lead instruments are the two main things I keep busy with.
