Interview with Michael Ruberu

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: I'm proud of every song I've had the opportunity to work on. The ones that mean the most are the ones I write as the soundtrack of my life. I have a few of those that will fortunately live on after I'm gone since they are radio-ready.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: I'm working on my marketing for my music career.

  5. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  6. A: A satisfied customer

  7. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  8. A: The biggest misconception is probably that vocal chords do not get tired :)

  9. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  10. A: acoustic guitar in a TRK case, 20 packs of strings, and a solar-powered recorder with lots of memory.

  11. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  12. A: I would like to work with people who can expand my skill as a singer by seeing me in their vision. Arriving at the end of a project brings me into that vision and expands my musical horizons.

  13. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  14. A: References, References, References. having the correct references with detailed highlights makes the production brief far less complicated.

  15. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  16. A: I have no particular order regarding genre. Projects come according to the buyer's needs. My personal project is singer-songwriter, but I find it essential to find myself in other genres. This is why Soundbetter is important to my growth as an artist.

  17. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  18. A: Professionalism

  19. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  20. A: If you refer to my soundcloud you will find versatility. "Lit (In the Darkness)" carries a mountain of emotion. I have a voice that speaks volumes. I can also be bright and breezy in "Little Crazy". "Beautiful" is a sweet wedding song that speaks love into your life. "Could You" is edgy electro-pop. Don't forget the gospel/house ability in B-Train.

  21. Q: What's your typical work process?

  22. A: I'm very flexible and accommodating. Typically I listen to both reference and demo...get clarifications from the buyer, and go to work. It's about quality and making positive connections that bring me into other projects. I am a perfectionist and will burn the midnight oil until I get it right.

  23. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  24. A: Logic X Avantone pro cv-12 C451B Sennheiser e935 Babyface pro LA-610 Mkii iMac Aston Halo

  25. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  26. A: I vibe with singers that have similar tones. George Michael, Jason Mraz, and Tracy Chapman. I was first drawn into Pierre Marchand as a producer when I found commonality with Sarah McLachlan's "Fumbling Towards Ecstacy" album. I have never had the honor of working with him. I have however been incredibly fortunate to work with Davor Jordanovski who has a world-renowned ability to create mesmerizing soundscapes. Michael Hanson from Glass Tiger fame has an incredible mind that blows me away with his multifaceted expertise. Ben Pelchat (Turbo Zebra) has guided me through a journey in pop. I can also recommend a couple of producers on Soundbetter who have truly pushed some of our collaborations into pieces that attract professional attention.

  27. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  28. A: I am experienced in house, pop, edm and ballad styles.

  29. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  30. A: Definitely

  31. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  32. A: I like analog sound with digital convenience.

  33. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  34. A: Satisfaction guaranteed

  35. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  36. A: Are you available? Let me check my schedule.

  37. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  38. A: Listen to previous work. If you truly believe that the singer's sound will elevate your song, your money is well spent.

  39. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  40. A: I have been doing this for nearly 4 years since I discovered the platform. I have been recording for over 10 years.

  41. Q: How would you describe your style?

  42. A: My voice is smooth with a decent range. My accent is Canadian so I have a neutral annunciation.

  43. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  44. A: Reference Track? Important preferences? Timeline?
