Adam Selzer on SoundBetter

Mix Engineer, Record Producer, founder of Type Foundry Recording Studio (since 1998). I've worked with M. Ward (recording/mixing/touring for over 20 years), Peter Buck (REM), Blind Pilot, Laura Gibson, Peter Broderick, and hundreds more. I have just built a fantastic sounding dedicated mix room from the ground up. I love analog gear & great songs.

Mixing is my favorite part of making records. Whether it's creating a pure representation of the recordings, or taking them to a surreal place, my only goal is to make the artists happy. I spend most of my time recording and mixing other artists, but I have also created my own music under the band names Norfolk & Western and Alialujah Choir, and most recently under my own name. I have also been a contributing writer for Tape Op Magazine.

Testimonials
“I’ve been working with Adam for over 20 years and he always has a way of accenting the best parts of every production - I highly recommend him for all your mixing and recording needs" -M. Ward

"Over the last 15 years I’ve co-produced and recorded at least 10 albums with my go-to guy Adam Selzer as co-producer and engineer. I could always trust him at the board and his experience as a musician gives him great knowledge to guide the process." -Peter Buck (REM)

“Adam Selzer has recorded and mixed a lot of music I have created, from The Decemberists to my weird synth pop. He is a very skilled engineer, though not fussy at all. His mixes and recordings sound lush but still have a natural feel and intensity. I have also been impressed by his quick turn around time in terms of mixes. I hire him all the time and so should you!” Jenny Conlee (The Decemberists)

I've had the opportunity to work with Adam on a number of mixes now, and the finished product always exceeds my expectations. Adam is always open to direction but he also brings his own mixing expertise and musicality to his work in a way that always benefits the song! Plus, he's super easy to work with! I highly recommend working with Adam!

Another wonderful experience working with Adam! I've got several different-sounding songs on an album I'm working on, and Adam's been great helping me dial in a sound I'm happy with for each style. He's patient and has the ear, skills and tools to get the job done (and quick).

Another great mix from Adam! No matter what I throw at him, full string sections or horn sections, or this time around, a bagpipe chorus and Celtic drumline, Adam always finds the song and does it justice. Great communicator and excellent work every time! I highly recommend Adam!

Absolute pro! This was the first song Adam and I worked on. He brought new ideas to the table, provided great mixes, communicated well, and was more than patient with my requests.

If you're looking for someone that will be a partner to make your song better, look no further.

I had a great experience working with Adam. The mix & master he completed is amazing. He brings his sensibility as a song writer and musician to his role as an engineer, and you can hear it in the quality of his work. He understands what the song and what it needs to realize its full potential. He's also easy to work with and a great communicator. I will absolutely work with Adam again!

Interview with Adam Selzer

  1. Q: How would you describe your style?

  2. A: Easy going, easy to work with.

  3. Q: What's your typical work process?

  4. A: I like to spend a fair amount of time with each song, often taking short ear breaks. I start with looking at the big picture, getting the song to a place where it's very listenable before focusing on the details. Then I go in and tweak EQ, compression, levels, effects, etc. I generally spend one day per song.

  5. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  6. A: I run Type Foundry Recording Studio and also just built a dedicated mix room off-site. It was built from the ground up by acoustician Derek Trost. I use a combination of analog and digital gear. I have tons of plugins and a good collection of analog outboard gear (see list).

  7. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  8. A: Like most, I love the Beatles- songs, production, engineering. Almost any production trick used today was probably done first by the Beatles. I love Tchad Blake's artistry, Tom Waits's production. I love the sheen of Fleetwood Mac, and the lo-fi growl of Charlie Patton.

  9. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  10. A: I mostly mix and produce. My goal is to support the artist in their artistic visions. I try and help them achieve the sound they're looking for, whether that means taking an active, creative roll, or acting more as technical engineer.
