Jake Masigan on SoundBetter

What do the Foo Fighters, Lil Nas X, and Katy Perry have in common? You guessed it! I've never worked with them! But hopefully, I get work with you! Let's create and have fun working on your track, and maybe have a few laughs along the way.

My name is Jake Masigan. I am a sound engineer based in Manila. I help artists bring their sound and identity to their songs. I have a great ear for music, and I always make sure that the artists I work with have smiles on their faces.

I graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music Production at the De La Salle - College of Saint Benilde, one of the only programs in the Philippines to offer a a full music production course from the pre-production stage to the business aspects of music. I then moved to working at recording studios around the Metro either as a freelance engineer, or their house engineer.

I've been continuously working with artists from the local music scene, sessioning for them live, producing their tracks, engineering their recording sessions, and of course, mixing and mastering. I am also an audio editor for TV, radio, and digital advertisements.

I am also an audio technician at Center Staging Studios at Burbank, California. I set up front of house, monitor systems, and backline for high profile artists. Some artists that I have worked for at Center Staging are John Legend, The Wallflowers, The Fray, Megan Thee Stallion, and Giveon to name a few. We also work on big events such as The Grammys, the BET awards, and the Hollywood Impact awards.

Hope to work with you soon!

As a beginner in the music scene, Jake really helped me get started in the right direction. To be more specific, his mixing and mastering were able to elevate the entire sound of my whole EP. Knowing that I can be a very demanding client, he is very easy to work with and always makes it a point to always exceeds my expectations. I'd gladly recommend him to anyone!

I have worked with Jake for 5 songs now... one thing I like about working with Jake is that he is patient and creative... he pours down creative juices into the project and extract some more from you as the song writer... will be working with him for a few more projects... your song needs a Jake

Worked with Jake on two tracks. One was a simple acoustic track. My concern was that I didn't add enough layers to make the song sound good, but Jake's mixing made everything sound bigger. I also a did a full band track with Jake wherein he even took the time to add guitar and keyboard layers to make the song sound even better. It helps that he's a fantastic musician himself, so he can quickly pick-up on your intention and make it come to life. Working with Jake is a MUST!

Interview with Jake Masigan

  1. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  2. A: I get to help my fellow musicians

  3. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  4. A: That it isn't a real job. Let's prove them wrong.

  5. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  6. A: I usually just have a good conversation with clients. I like making them feel comfortable when talking to me.

  7. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  8. A: I'd tell them that they should pick an engineer that they will have a good relationship with. Being a musician myself, I feel that the artist - engineer relationship is as important as the engineer's skills.

  9. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  10. A: A pair of ROKIT 5s since I am already attuned to them, a UAD Apollo, an SM7B, a Martin Dreadnought, and my sanity since I assume I'm gonna be stuck on that island for a while.

  11. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  12. A: I've became a freelance sound engineer straight out of college. Stopped for a year or two to get a day job just to get by. I realized that I made a mistake, so I quit my job, started trusting myself, and became a freelance sound engineer again. Best decision of my life so far.

  13. Q: How would you describe your style?

  14. A: I'm all about versatility. I work with what the song needs. I guess you can call that a style in and of itself.

  15. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  16. A: I'd like to work with Vulfpeck one day. I think they'd be really fun to work with.

  17. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  18. A: Trust your ears

  19. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  20. A: I'd say my strongest skill is my resourcefulness. I make things work.

  21. Q: What's your typical work process?

  22. A: Usually, I talk with the artist first to get to know more about them which helps me figure out the direction I should bring the song to.

  23. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  24. A: Usually mixing and mastering. If needed, I also record guitar and keys for them.
