Daniel is a trombonist and sound artist from Buenos Aires, Argentina. Focusing on the intersections of improvised music, composition, physical processes of instruments, noise, Jazz, and electronics, Daniel explores the diversity of sound and technique in diverse contexts.
With a passion for media, nature, and technology, Daniel has created a large body of experimental work that evokes both human instinct and industrial innovation. Daniel continues to research ways in which he can deconstruct instrumental functions to find an individual identity as a soloist, collaborator, and sideman.

Beginning his musical training in Jazz at the Conservatory Superior Manuel de Falla in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Daniel has worked with Pablo Fenoglio (Soloist of the Teatro Colón), George Lewis, Peter Evans, Ingrid Laubrock, Tyshawn Sorey, Barry Harrys, Tim Berne, Marc Ducret and Tony Malaby, among others.

Daniel Works in his home studio doing recordings of several instruments (Trombone, guitar, electric bass, electronics, harmonica) also works as a producer, composer, arranger, songwritter, mixing, and mastering sessions in Pro Tools 10 HD, Ableton 10, Digital Performer, etc.

Interview with Daniel Bruno

  1. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  2. A: I enjoy a variety of styles, from jazz to hip-hop, classical music to salsa. I am always trying to study and improve different techniques to get the perfect sound in different situations. My referents in musical production are Damon Albarn, J Dilla, David Byrne, Bjork, Frank Zappa, among others.

  3. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  4. A: I'm a session trombonist, arrenger and mixing engineer. I work from my homestudio in Buenos Aires, Argentina

  5. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  6. A: I really like to know a client's tastes and purpose. Who inspires them? Why are they releasing music? There are different ways to work for different outcomes like for radio, to go viral, etc.

  7. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  8. A: Take the time to clearly communicate your vision and expect nothing less than excellence.

  9. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  10. A: My Reel-to-reel recorder, some tape, one mic, Headphones and my trombone.

  11. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  12. A: I started studying music at conservatory in 2009. In 2013 I started working with different producers and labels.

  13. Q: How would you describe your style?

  14. A: I like productions that are simple but "expensive" sounding. I take time to make sure the sounds I use are full, rich and expressive.

  15. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  16. A: Keep it simple.

  17. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  18. A: I've been working for the last 7 years on plenty of styles: Rock, Pop, Funk, Blues, Jazz, Avant-garde, Electronic, Classical, Salsa, Tango.

  19. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  20. A: -Stamina and dedication to continue practicing every day. -Flexibility to work with different styles, situations and people. -Ability to work well as part of a team. -creativity. -Self-discipline and good time management

  21. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  22. A: I always think on how to give more character to a song. Thats why I use variety of mics and trombones, to choose tone and be able to play smoother or really loud depending on the track.

  23. Q: What's your typical work process?

  24. A: I have a conversation with the client where they send the track and ideas for recording, in less than 48 they receive the tracks with the instrument required recorded. If they are not happy I can send corrections 2 times by the same price.

  25. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  26. A: I have been working with a simple set. My interface is an Apollo Twin (Universal Audio), using Mackie monitors (HR824) and different mics depending of the style (Sure Sm57, Blue Mouse, Akg D112). Running Pro Tools 10 HD, Live Ableton 10, Digital Performer on MacBook Pro.
