ThaGata Negrra on SoundBetter

I'm a female alt RAPPER whose work was featured on Hulu's "East Los High" (four episodes over two seasons). L.A. Mag named me one of "Four Musical Artists From East Los High You Need To Hear". I've worked with nerdcore royalty; I'm the one you want if you need someone with a fun, versatile array of flows. Cheer music folx frequently hire me.

PLEASE READ:
My mainstay is alternative hip-hop and nerdcore hip-hop, but I have been known to work outside my genre because there IS no box to think outside of-- as far as I'm concerned. I rhyme nearly anywhere a rhyme is apropos.

I ask that you please CHECK MY WORK AND WHAT I ACTUALLY DO before sending a message, so no-one's time is wasted. If you are randomly casting a wide net, fishing and waiting to see who will bite, please skip me and move on to another artist. I've had more than one request to do something I definitely don't do, e.g.: sing male vocals, sing--not RAP--an entire song, do male voiceovers, do an entire song for free. Thank you.

Vocals are delivered dry for *your* convenience; I do no effects. If this is an issue, I am not your girl. Turnaround time is 3 to 5 days depending on the complexity of the project/amount of revisions.
Rates also depend on complexity of project/amount of revisions. Anything over 3 revisions requires a new proposal to be drafted for the extra labour.

Job MUST BE FUNDED BEFORE I BEGIN WORKING. Additionally, I offer no refund on a partially-funded job if I have done the customary amount of revisions. NO EXCEPTIONS.

If you choose me for a song, I normally request a feature credit. If I write more than four bars, we are going outside work-for-hire territory and that needs to be discussed.

Tell me about your project and how I can help, through the 'Contact' button above.

Amazing tone, timbre, presence in her work! I received already amazing sounding top line, ad libs, harmonies before any processing which made The project come to life. Easy to work with & very high quality vocalist. Really look forward to working with her again!

Working with GATA was a great experience. She helped me craft a record that's both cute and fierce. She and I pushed the art in several directions to experiment. I loved her attitude, professionalism, and desire to try weird stuff until we landed on something awesome. I highly recommend working with her.

Interview with ThaGata Negrra

  1. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  2. A: I would recommend Six6Pomona, who is an amazing producer.

  3. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  4. A: Its flexibility and the absolute fun I have.

  5. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  6. A: The biggest misconception is that I am a one-trick pony. Most folx in my genre don't get me, or what I do, and barely know what I'm capable of. They just go on looks and my dancey material, and dismiss my stuff as hip-hop because it's not what they do.

  7. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  8. A: I worked on a song for sync with a client here and I was proud of how good it ended up sounding. I was really impressed with how it all came together.

  9. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  10. A: There are benefits to both, but since we are in a mainly digital world...

  11. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  12. A: Besides how soon the turnaround is, they might ask me to take artistic freedom--how I might interpret what their vision is.

  13. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  14. A: Microphone, headphones, laptop...I mean: are we running on solar power, here?

  15. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  16. A: Know what you're going to do before you attempt recording. It really helps if you have your ideas down.

  17. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  18. A: I am working on some nerdcore projects, and an EP.

  19. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  20. A: I will work diligently on your project to suit your vision, because I'm a bit of a perfectionist (understatement).

  21. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  22. A: I ask how I can help realise their idea, what they need, what the lyrics are, and if they checked out any of what I do.

  23. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  24. A: Be honest and descriptive about what you want, be honest about your budget, be prompt with any changes you might want, and be courteous.

  25. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  26. A: I think I was always gonna end up in the family business, which is music. I've been doing some form of music since childhood.

  27. Q: How would you describe your style?

  28. A: Straight-no-chaser spunky velvety technicoulour hip-hop realness. Kawaii in the streets; senpai in the sheets (vocally/lyrically, of course).

  29. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  30. A: Artist: This is gonna seem odd, but Billie Joe Armstrong. I like his style. I would probably want to work with ?Love because of how he thinks, and De La Soul because childhood dream, LOL. Producer: Rick Rubin. Because Rick Rubin.

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: I work on mainly alt. hip-hop, but I have worked with rock and dance music.

  33. Q: What's your typical work process?

  34. A: Map out what the client wants, build, revise, record, maybe revise again to client's tweaks, and then present finished product.

  35. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  36. A: My strongest skill would be rhyme vocals, but I'm a good writer as well.

  37. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  38. A: I bring a quirky, unique-but-still-familiar vibe to a song.

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: Professional setup in a family-run studio.

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: I'm still inspired by Golden-era Hip-Hop as well as some funk and plenty of New Wave music.

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: The most common type of work is rap vocals, usually when they'd prefer something cute and sassy/no-nonsense.
