Brooke Daye on SoundBetter

Produce | Mix | Master - yup. Simple. Why color it? Unless it's with great sounding analog gear or a fantastic saturation plug in.

I have 21 years experience working as a producer, mixer and mastering engineer.
I love working with talented people on music.

I take it song by song so that I can focus on the product, the artist and the vision that we all have in making the song as best as it can be.

The thing I enjoy most about making music is meeting new people - from all over the world and getting to know what inspires them and their sounds.

I have produced and mixed/mastered 100s of songs for global hiphop talent as well as rock bands and folk artists.
All of those genres hit home with me but I specialize in hiphop because that is where I came up.

If you want someone who cares about you and your project lets work together and get to know each other.

Interview with Brooke Daye

  1. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  2. A: Jay Stapely. Dude played great guitar for me on a single in 2016.

  3. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  4. A: My last album as a solo artist: Blue Collar Memories. I never really dreamed of being a performer, but I wrote and produced and mixed and mastered my own project for my hometown that has been hit by hard times. It really hit hard for me. I tried to smash hiphop with classic rock and folk. I think I pulled it off too. I enjoyed that project so much because so many talented people helped me on it. Top of my head about 15 people contributed. I was overwhelmed by the support. Makes me feel good.

  5. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  6. A: Mastering a Reggae Album, Mixing a Hip-Hop EP and Producing and Mixing a Pop Rock Single.

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: Both. Cause both are awesome.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: That I will be on time and on budget. That you will get a project that you can be proud of.

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: The creative side of mixing is absolutely pleasing.

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: Q: How much do you charge? A: I prefer to work within budgets if possible, so how much did you get saved for this project?

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: That's its "mixing"...you know..."like a DJ?!?"

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: I want my clients to tell me 3 things: 1) Deadline 2) Ref Tracks 3) How Many Edits Do You Need

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: Be ready, be prepared and don't be scared to ask for what you want.

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: Mac Book/Apollo/X Desk/SLATE VMS/UAD OCTO Card

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: I started as a hiphop beatmaker in 2001. From there I got my first pro tools setup in 2007 and since have just kept adding to my gear and refining my sound.

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: I'm a punchy type mixer who likes to get the mix wide and energetic.

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: Easy...J Mascis. I want to mix a Dinosaur Jr record so bad I'd do it for free. And give endless recalls!

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: Get it right at the source.

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: HipHop, Rock (all the sub genres), Folk/Country, Reggae, Dub, Metal (all the sub genres)

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: I'm prompt, accountable and I like to make friends with the people I work with.

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: I bring the love of what I do to every project and the desire to make people happy with their efforts. I hope my love affair with chasing the perfect sound matches with the artist's vision and that we all toast and smile after a job well done.

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: To the point and structured for the first 75% then pensive and loose for the last 25.

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: I run a hybrid setup with 24 channels of analog summing through an SSL X Desk and X Panda configuration. I use a center section that features a Drawmer 1968/Kush Audio Clairphonic/Neve 542 Tape Simulator and some clean gain through some BAE 1073 LBs. Tons of plug ins under the hood. All powered by an Antelope Audio Orion 32+.

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: This is very difficult to answer. I usually listen for music that has a tight low end with a warm and rich mid range and a breathy top end. The artists that fit under that description are many because there are so many talented people in this world that it's hard to make a list. If I had to make one...I wouldn't want to leave anyone out. But... Ya can't go wrong with: Pink Floyd Smashing Pumpkins Jay Z A Tribe Called Quest Dinosaur Jr The Ramones Led Zeppelin Rage Against the Machine Tool The Offspring Green Day CCR Bob Seager Foo Fighters Yea...all them and more.

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: I do 3 things in my studio: 1) Mix Records 2) Produce Acts 3) Master Songs
