Anthony Galindo on SoundBetter

Anthony Galindo is a music producer, songwriter and mixing engineer.

I was born in New York City. A multi-instrumentalist, I'm a well trained guitarist, producer, songwriter and mixing engineer. I've have produced and engineered countless commercials and jingles for La Mega 97.9 FM. I was the studio manager at EMW Music Group producing, mixing and developing artists before pursuing my freelance career.

For the unsigned artist or those on an indie budget, I offer hands-on mixing using one of New York’s most unique hybrid analogue/digital studios. My vision of the dynamics and sonic quality is what can always be expected before passing a final mix.

As a producer, I know how to create the right sonic palette and enhance the vocals with arrangements, textures and grooves that support the song and make listeners jump out of their seats!

I've been working with Anthony for the last 4 years, and he is hands down one of the best NYC has to offer. He's extremely knowledgeable, and is very reliable when quick turnarounds are needed. I can honestly say that I know very few people on his level. Great person to have in your corner.

Anthony has one of the best ears for mixing that I've heard in a long time. Every time I work with him, he focuses 100% on the mixing. Not only vocally, but also musically. That's very rare to come by. He's extremely amazing at what he does. Very professional too.

Interview with Anthony Galindo

  1. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  2. A: I am very hands-on and I promise to deliver a unique and multi-layered final record.

  3. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  4. A: How long does it take to produce a song form beginning to end? I usually can say that in a one day block of ten hours or so, I can have a fully produced record with all the major elements and format built-in.

  5. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  6. A: I like the up and coming artist Mos Kenna.

  7. Q: What's your typical work process?

  8. A: In a pop writing session, depending on the style and what an artist comes in with, I like to start with some basic chords or sometimes I'm inspired with a rhythm/drum section. After laying down a basic skeleton, I like to focus on lyrical and vocal production and song structure followed by laying down a scratch vocal. Then a first round of production followed by a second round. And then a background vocal session followed by a lead vocal session. I tend to mix along the way so after vocals are tracked, I do a first mix pass and that's usually followed by a couple more production/overdub edits and on average two more mixes before a final is ready for a master.

  9. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  10. A: I worked on the Amber Skye Rivers EP as an associate producer and mixing engineer. It was an invaluable learning experience from artist development to songwriting to production and release.

  11. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  12. A: The upcoming debut album for Jennifer Denali.

  13. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  14. A: The freedom to experiment.

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: That great production and mixing is more important than the song.

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: How do you want your listeners to feel when they hear your record? What's the story you're trying to convey? What do you want your music to say about you?

  19. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  20. A: I was born in the Lower East Side, New York City and began studying jazz guitar, singing and writing at age 9 and hasn’t looked back since. In 2006 he founded Nenes Con Estylo a latin music group with his cousin Danny Collado, whom before his passing, greatly influenced my musical style and tireless work ethic. I developed songwriting, mixing engineer and music producer chops during this time and worked out of the world famous Smash Studios. After earning a bachelor’s degree in Music & Sound Recording from the University of New Haven, I went straight to work at La Mega 97.9 FM producing commercials, jingles as the lead assistant in the engineering department. I then joined the team at EMW Music Group as a music producer, mixing engineer and studio manager. I also released music and performed local and east coast tour dates with NCE. I spent several years with EMW before pursuing my own freelance career as record producer and mixing engineer.

  21. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  22. A: Both! With Analog there's just natural textures, colors and unquantifiable traits that you just can't simulate. I'm also super pro-technology, and today's digital tools allow to do amazing things as well.

  23. Q: How would you describe your style?

  24. A: A great song is about the arrangements, textures and the groove. I always keep in mind that the music must enhance and support the song and the vocals. Making the listener feel the emotion that was in the room when the song was created takes discipline to execute. I know how to create the right sonic palette and make listeners jump out of their seats!

  25. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  26. A: I encourage the artist to share a good reference mix and notes, in order for me to understand their vision on how the record should sound.

  27. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  28. A: Focusrite Red Preamp, Manley Microphone, SSL GBus, Manley VariMu, Manley Massive Passive.

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: Make sure every instrument or musical phrase enhances and sonically matches the story you're telling.

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: Top 40 Pop, R&B/Soul, Hip-Hop and Latin/Tropical.

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: I can balance and clean a mix very quickly and I can humbly say I play guitar expertly.

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: I try to bring a passionate and energetic character to any song.

  37. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  38. A: My studio is always evolving but it always maintain a good hybrid analog/digital balance. I use Focal Trio6's and Adam A7X's. I'm a heavy Universal Audio plugin user and definitely love my Sonnox, SoundToys plugins among others. My outboard gear process is pretty elaborate but includes Pultec-style EQs and SSL G Buss-style compressors which are on all my mixes.

  39. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  40. A: On the mixing side, some of my favorite engineers include Michael Brauer, Bruce Swedien and Rik Simpson. Musicians and producers that I love include influences like Quincy Jones, The Eagles, Metallica, Madonna, Hans Zimmer, Salaam Remi, DJ Premier, Timbaland, Dr. Dre, Eminem, 50 Cent, Nas, Michael Jackson, Sade, Lauryn Hill, U2, Boyz II Men, 112, Coldplay, Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, Aventura, Jose Jose.

  41. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  42. A: Most of my work is concentrated on producing/songwriting and mixing.
