Deuce B on SoundBetter

My name's Deuce B, and I am a hip hop songwriter currently based in San Diego. I've been writing and recording music for the past 15 years, but have recently ventured out into writing for other artists. My sound fits in two primary buckets, which are: lyrical a la Kendrick Lamar and melody driven a la Bryson Tiller.

For the past 15 years, I've been primarily focused on my career as an independent artist. Over that span of time, my music granted me to opportunity to open for a wide array of artists ranging from Lil B and Skizzy Mars to Maxo Kream and Father. I've released a few projects via streaming services and on SoundCloud that give insight into what I bring to the table.

More recently, I have been writing songs for local artists and pitching to a few major artists. One of my highlights is a song entitled "Deeper" performed by an artist named Trez Falsetto. Aside from my contributions to other artists' songs, my own catalog as an artist is a testament to my lyrical flexibility as I can produce intricate rhyme-schemes while also being able to tap into a more melodic sound. I hope to work with you soon!

Deuce is amazing and a fast worker, i had a deadline coming up for a project working with an indie label in town and we needed someone to come up with a rap part while we came up with the more R&B melodic top lines. Deuce came through with lyrics AND a top line in less than a week! Fast worker! Thank you so much and will definitely be working more with him in the future.

Interview with Deuce B

  1. Q: How would you describe your style?

  2. A: I am a lyricist first, but love coming up with unique melodies. I'd like to say flexible, but that's a bit vague. If I were to compare myself to artists, I'd say Tory Lanez and Kendrick Lamar.

  3. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  4. A: Definitely Lil Wayne. He's the reason I got into music and he inspires me with his work ethic. Drake and Smino are up there as well!

  5. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  6. A: Make it sound good. It doesn't matter what equipment you have if your ear doesn't like it.

  7. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  8. A: I work on primarily hip-hop, but I can venture out into the R&B realm (as a writer, not a vocalist, haha).

  9. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  10. A: Outside of music, I feel like my number one skill is communication. I can brag about how good I am at whatever I do musically, but at the end of the day, I'm here to serve a client. I want to get exactly what the client is envisioning so I can execute to the best of my ability.

  11. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  12. A: I bring unmatched lyrical ability. I'm highly confident I can produce an intricate rhyme-scheme regardless of the type of song. Aside from that, I am really good at understand how melodies affect the listener. I recognize that some things are trendy because they work, but I aim to make songs that people vibe to but also have a unique sound or approach.

  13. Q: What's your typical work process?

  14. A: A lot of melodies that I produce come out of nowhere. I like to experiment and switch flows at the drop of a dime. I do not like being stagnant with anything, so I'm always trying to find a new way to communicate my thoughts. Usually I sit with an instrumental and hum or freestyle nonsensical sounds and form lyrics around whatever melody I produce. I strive to execute the feeling of the melody rather than being too caught up in the lyrics initially.

  15. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  16. A: My studio setup is simple. All I need is my interface, a condenser mic, Rokits, and Logic Pro. I've never had a big budget so I do everything in house. I'm a big believer in creating magic with a lean setup.

  17. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  18. A: Kendrick Lamar inspires me the most not only because of his lyrical ability, but because his understanding of how to craft a great song as well. His voice control and the decisions he makes on records are top notch. Other artists that inspire me and Drake and Tory Lanez based on their ability to be both lyrical and melodic whenever they choose.

  19. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  20. A: My experience as an artists had me complete a large number of features, most with a single day turnaround. Since I recognized my knack for producing quality verses quickly, I've ventured out to make records for other artists. The type of song depends on the artist, but my individual style is mainly lyrical, but I can also produce quality melodies.
