ill Double on SoundBetter

Music Producer specializzato in produzioni Hip-Hop and EDM/Pop. FETICISTA del campionamento e del Sound Design. Music Producer specialized in Hip-Hop and EDM/Pop productions. I LOVE sampling and crafting new sounds from scratch.

I'm Gabriele Gambino (ill Double) and I'm a music producer and sound designer based in Milano.

I make music since I was 14 years old, starting from the basics of the hip-hop beats creation. Growing up, I've developed skills in the Edm, pop, electronic pop and experimental music production.
I moved to London in 2016, where I've studied Electronic Music Production and Art of Mixing at Point Blank Music College.
I've always been in love with the art of sampling (natural sounds and old bangers) and sound design.

I offer services of single tracks/whole albums production (Hip-Hop, EDM, but I'm also open to work on different genres), sound design and mixing.

Dope sounds!! We’ve co-produced an Edm track and he mixed down a couple of hip-hop beats of mine, a trap and a old school one. This guy has some really great skills!

Interview with ill Double

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: I’ve produced an experimental trap EP called “O.O.O.M (One Out Of Many)”.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: I’m working on a Electro-Indie album.

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: Yes, Christian Duka, we worked together already on one of my experimental projects.

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: Digital!! The result is the same of the analog today. Analog is an expensive hobby.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: Respect my job, and I’ll respect the music we gonna make as much as I can.

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: I like to excite people with my sounds.

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: Customer: Can you make it first? And then we gonna speak about the terms of payment. Me: NO!

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: A producer needs to play instruments, and a mix engineer can do miracles.

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: First of all, I usually ask what kind of mood they want to recreate in every single track. Then, if they prefer real or digital instruments, if they have any deadline and, in the end, if they have any specific request.

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: Please, do not ask to copy any other famous artist.

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: My Macbook, Audio Inferface, Beyerdynamic Headphones, Thermionic Culture Vulture, Thermionic Culture Phoenix Valve Compressor.

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: I’ve started as bedroom producer and rapper, just for having with my friends, I used to make really simple Hip-Hop beats. I’ve actually started doing it professionally when I was 20, seven years ago.

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: I would say my style is made by a 50% of improvisation and the other 50% by the research of the mood. I always try to give a specific feeling when I build up the basics of a track.

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: I would like to work with Deadmau5, cause I’m really curious to see how far his mixing knowledge can go. But he’s not the only one, I mean, Crookers is probably at his same level, I like his way to make music with nothing.

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: Do not always follow a specific process! If you hear a sound that you like and you think it could be interesting if tweaked: DO NOT LEAVE IT ON THE SIDE! Keep working on it instead of ignoring that idea and building up the same drum beat as always.

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: I usually work on hip-hop and electronic music in general but, lately I’m re-working an Electro-Indie album.

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: Resampling old tunes and natural sounds I think, and creating some really catchy basslines.

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: I bring some wavy dark vibes that I’ve learned from Hip-Hop and Bass Music, rich of sub and low frequencies, old distorted synths and warm basslines.

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: I don’t follow a specific process for the production of a track, I can start from tweaking a sample that I like or designing a sound on a VST, from a drum kick or a bassline. Contrariwise, in a mixing session I start cleaning up all the stems from pops and noises in the background, then I give my own sound to all the instruments and vocals, finding the right space in the stereo image and in the end separating them into groups. This, will help to glue up everything together.

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: I mostly work “in the box” using emulations of legendary analog gears for both of the uses (Production and Mixing). My Quad Core Macbook Pro is the brain of the studio and I use a Pair Adam Audio F7 speakers (always worked with Adam monitors), Beyerdynamic DT990-PRO and Audio-Technica HD headphones for monitoring. I also record vocals and samples with a really versatile SE Electronics X1. All of these gears are connected between each other by a Focusrite Saffire Pro40 Firewire Audio Interface.

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: Deadmau5 and Timbaland inspired me for the art of Sound Design and Sampling. But I would also say Kanye West, Scott Storch, Crookers, RL Grime, Diplo, Skrillex....they’re all my mentors.

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: I produce tracks from scracth, usually crafting sounds from the basics, or I rework their own ideas.
