Brian managed to bring out more details in the melody whilst cleverly balancing vocals and instruments in order to master my song and take it to the next level of indie pop. I appreciate his enthusiasm for music and it’s always a joy for me to have Brian work on one of my records.

Brian took the time to listen to my mix and establish the areas of the track that required enhancing or limiting, whilst maintaining the song’s original dynamics. His attention to detail and analytical approach meant I felt involved in the whole process. I now have a master which has more life and is radio-play ready! I hope to work with Brian again and I would recommend his service to any musician wanting a top level finishing touch to their record.

Interview with Brian Newell

  1. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  2. A: I'm working on making myself better and learning something new every day.

  3. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  4. A: Go with someone that will work WITH you, not FOR you, and will exceed your expectations. Plenty of people will take your business, your money, and "get the job done." But finding someone who wants to work together with great customer service makes the process better for everyone.

  5. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  6. A: MacBook Pro, MH 2882, Master Transfer Console, Grado SR225e, and water.

  7. Q: How would you describe your style?

  8. A: Intentional. Every move and decision to do, or not to do something is intentional to highlight your music.

  9. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  10. A: Wave Raver. I've loved his music from the beginning and had a chance to see him perform in Brooklyn a while ago. Upbeat, catchy, and fun, his music always puts me in a good mood.

  11. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  12. A: Have a reference track. Listen to how the music feels and compare that to your song throughout the production process

  13. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  14. A: Lot's of varying genre's, but typically singer/songwriter or indie pop.

  15. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  16. A: Listening!

  17. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  18. A: I bring an unbiased set of ears. My goal is to present your music in the best light, letting the artists intention and message shine through above all else.

  19. Q: What's your typical work process?

  20. A: During an initial listen, I make notes of key elements that either need adjusting or enhancement. I then make broad adjustments to shape the track, then reference the source, reference track, and master accordingly for small tweaks until the song reaches its maximum potential. All of this depends on what the song needs and I make sure to accommodate accordingly.

  21. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  22. A: My audio set up is totally unique, with an interesting mix of custom made and professional equipment. From the power source, to the super clean audio path, to pristine monitoring, the signal flow is made with the highest quality components. This includes cabling built by myself using Mogami cable, Neutrik connectors, and gold interconnects. My favorite piece is my Master Transfer Console. It's one-of-a-kind, incorporating Elma switches, high tolerance components (<0.01%), super low noise floor and minimal cross talk between LR channels. It has gain, width, a special tilt eq, HPF and LPF, MS processing, as well as mutes for monitoring. It's super clean, and is amazingly effective at making careful adjustments.

  23. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  24. A: I draw a lot of inspiration from my colleagues and veterans in the Pro Audio Industry. Bob Katz, Rich Morales, Chris Sclafani, I admire all their work and it's a treat to hear when they've worked on something new!

  25. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  26. A: Audio Mastering for digital releases and DDP Creation!
