Interview with Spacelab Mixing (Germany)

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: I just finished mixing and mastering (CD, vinyl, digital) for a US metal band. This was a very challenging job, and it turned out that I had to play the role of "online producer" to finish this production. There were a lot of loose ends in this production and they needed someone to finally finish the job. I was also able to contribute creatively by contributing additional orchestral arrangements.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: My tax return! And I hate it.

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: If I answered that question, I would be an even worse businessman than I already am.

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: I'm an analog guy. With analog summing and some outboard, I can maintain a workflow like I learned back in the day with my analog 2-inch tape machine. And I just don't get that sound 100% out of the box. It needs some analog tools, knobs and faders.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: I always try to make the best of the material I get. But I'm not too shy to tell you when I find problems.

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: I can do the only thing in the world where I have a clou:)

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: Q: "How much does it cost to mix my song?" A: "That depends..."

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: There are people who believe that there is a "better-maker knob" for all kinds of crappy tracks. Technology can do incredible things these days, but the key to a good track or album is musicality, cool songs and tracks recorded in good quality.

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: How exactly did you record your stuff?

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: First, check my work that I have done for other clients. I hate being forced to mix something in a direction I don't like. Check out my youtube channel for that too: https://www.youtube.com/c/SPACELABMIXING

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: My SONOR drum set from the 80s (Phonic Plus), my good old drumcomp (which serves as a metronome) and enough sticks and drum heads. Not to forget a sufficient amount of earplugs, haha.

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: Started as a drummer, learned my first skills in a well known German studio called "Woodhouse Studio" with the well known German producer EROC. Opened my own recording studio in 1998 (on analog 2 inch 24trk). I did that until 2017 and produced and mixed about 140 albums in those 2 decades. Then I decided to stop doing that thanks to the home recording revolution and switched to a specialized mixing and mastering service.

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: I prefer 90's style productions because they sound more real than most modern stuff. I hate it when everything is 100% quantized and every little bit is cut to size. I hate loudness-war mastering, when people squeeze their stuff beyond belief.

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: I will work with anyone if I like the music and they can pay their bills:)

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: Your goal should be perfectly recorded source material, don't rely on "we'll fix it in the mix".

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: I like so called "female fronted symphonic metal". But also prog rock, punk, everything that has loud guitars and cool (hopefully real) drums, nice hooklines. I never work with styles like rap or hip-hop, that's not my cup of tea.

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: Drum processing. Followed by the ability to create mixes that always sound as transparent as possible, even if there are a lot of gtrs, keys and vox.

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: People say that I'm able to make something cool even out of "not so good" recording material. I've always come up with nice GTR FX and I'm very picky about the drums (being a drummer myself). But I have a good ear and sometimes I have to work more like an "online producer" to help people re-record certain tracks that turned out to be too crappy to use in a final mix, haha! I also arrange a little extra orchestration if requested.

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: I can't do top-down mixing. I always start with the drums, followed by all the other instruments, and then the vocals come in at the end. Again, call it oldschool. The mix is just processed with an analog SSL G-Series comp and then digitized. The dynamics are at -18dB LUFS. So anything is possible in mastering, from audiophile dynamics to loudness war. I have already mixed albums mastered by mastering guru Bob Katz and he liked my work very much :)

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: Cubase Pro 10.5, Melodyne, a number of plugins (Waves, Slate, Neural DSP, PA, NI and many others). Analog summing, some analog outboards for the drums and FX. RME converters, FAR (Focal) monitors, KRK subs. My room is small, but acoustically treated with bass traps, diffusers, absorbers, etc.

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: Being a drummer and having recorded 7 albums with my former prog rock band EVERON between 1992 and 2008, I know studio work from both sides of the desk. Let's say I'm a bit oldschool and prefer real drums and instruments. I never try to clone a certain sound when I do a mix, and I just do my thing here.

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: In my former recording and production studio (Spacelab Studio) over 150 albums have been produced by many bands since 1998. Since the beginning of 2018, I exclusively mix songs and albums that were either recorded by the artists themselves or in other recording studios. You send me your files, I do the mix. Since many people have a small budget these days, I recently started offering mastering (only for the tracks I mix).
