Josh Pawelczyk on SoundBetter

Specialized in crafting high-quality music from low-budget environments.

How often do you hear great songs with flat production? Most of the songs you hear from virtually any artist today feature overly tuned vocals, sampled drums and amplifier simulators. These practices, while fine in moderation, have ended up creating music that sounds too similar.

For the past eight years, I have been working as an audio engineer. In this time, I have worked on a plethora of low budget, bedroom-recorded projects. If you've ever recorded drums in a small room, you might have been let down by their lack of depth. The same goes for a guitar amp that was perhaps recorded at a low volume in an apartment, a DI bass track that lacks impact or boxy sounding vocals tracked in a tight space. You want to sound professional while maintaining your musical fingerprint, and I can solve this problem.

You don't have to settle for mediocre results when recording in a bedroom environment. The music that I've featured on this page is a collection of songs that I've mixed and mastered. Some of them were produced in bedroom recording studios, and others were recorded in expensive studio environments; can you tell which is which? If you enjoy the results, you should get in touch about your next project.

In a musical landscape where every production sounds the same, stand out in the crowd with your unique sound.

I had the pleasure of working with Josh during a live album recording for my group, Moths in the Attic. We rented a studio for two long day-sessions and Josh's professionalism and efficiency helped us make the most of our time there. His knowledge of the studio equipment and interface helped capture our true live sound. We continued working together in the mixing and mastering phases and Josh further demonstrated his willingness and ability to achieve the best end product. He has a great ear and intuition for all things audio engineering and I highly recommend working with him!

Josh is a fantastic audio engineer. I’ve worked on all sorts of projects with Josh ranging from jazz to metal and he always makes my bass sound great. Not only does he know the technical side of things but he’s easy to get along and helps take the tension out of recording. Now that I have the gear to track my bands I still use Josh to mix all my projects. He adds a lot of depth to recordings while helping the band get the sound we’re looking for. I highly recommend using Josh for your next project!

I can say from experience that Josh is one of the most efficient audio engineers that I've worked with while getting the best value possible for what you pay. I was fortunate enough to record with Josh on Ten05 Sharp's EP and I couldn't have been happier with the end product. It's not likely that the project would have gained the popularity it did, especially with the album being the group's first studio release, without Josh really polishing the sound that the group came to be known by. If you're looking to record and are working with a limited budget, Sounds By Josh won't let you down.

Interview with Josh Pawelczyk

  1. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  2. A: I have most extensively worked on rock, metal, folk and jazz.

  3. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  4. A: As an audio professional, I promise to be honest. I pride myself in producing authentic, genuine work. Timeless music is a reflection of true performance and undeniable writing. With this in mind, I make honest communication the first priority when working with others.

  5. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  6. A: I believe that my strongest skill has been found in working with budget recordings. Oftentimes, musicians recording on a lower budget will use cheap gear to get the job done. This can be discouraging, because their tracks and rough mixes probably don't sound as good as their ideal final product. I have been able to take lower-quality recordings and turn them into very well polished, balanced and professional sounding mixes. As long as the musicians nailed their parts in the recording process, I can take care of the rest and mix the music to be a serious contender in the marketplace.

  7. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  8. A: I most commonly handle editing and mixing for my clients. Taking care of the editing process brings a lot of satisfaction, knowing that I've helped make the rest of the music making process that much easier. Mixing, however, is where the fun really happens. The image of the song comes into focus, and there are even opportunities to frame the music in a completely different but tasteful light.
