Kä Neunhoffer on SoundBetter

Experienced flutist with a history in studio orchestral session playing.

Though I started piano at a young age, I found my passion in flute. I have a wide variety of experience as a performer with a long list of credits. I completed my Film Scoring degree at Berklee College of Music in 2017 and have been living/performing in Los Angeles since.

Interview with Kä Neunhoffer

  1. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  2. A: A short horror film and a theater production of a western.

  3. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  4. A: Both. We live in a world of infinite possibilities in the digital realm, but human error and organic sound can never be replaced. I try to include something analog and something acoustic in all of my pieces.

  5. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  6. A: Telling stories! Film scoring and flute playing alike rely on telling someone else's story with your own nuance and finesse.

  7. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  8. A: That film scoring is about writing music- 70% of the gig is just knowing the digital process and being able to successfully create a product in the box- you are your own engineer.

  9. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  10. A: My long-term goal

  11. Q: How would you describe your style?

  12. A: Somewhere between Brahms and Daft Punk. Extremely melody driven music (it's that flute player in me, what can I say).

  13. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  14. A: Orchestral experience- having the base of repertoire that I've been around for years has helped to round me out as a composer and avoid pitfalls that make the performing/recording process harder on musicians.

  15. Q: What's your typical work process?

  16. A: Create a piano sketch, get approval, write a piano reel, orchestrate, perform and record, mixing/mastering and voila! Work at about 4 hours per minute of music.

  17. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  18. A: Working on MAC OS - Cubase, ProTools, Finale, Digital Performer, Logic Pro, VE Pro, and others.

  19. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  20. A: The great film composers Alan Silvestri, Alexandre Desplat, and Michael Giacchino.

  21. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  22. A: Commercial composition (library music, including session playing)
