Music master's degree. Passionate about orchestral/film music.

Hi!

Eight things to know about me :

# 1 : I'm a composer from France and living in Paris.

# 2 : I've learned a lot of stuff all by myself when I was a kid, before going to university and study music more seriously (master's degree).

# 3 : I have collaborated with EastWest, the well known virtual instruments company, as a demo maker. I also worked on several advertising billboards as well as on animated audio logos.

# 4 : I only work on short films and short orchestral pieces... not on medium or feature films.

# 5 : I can provide sections separately to let you do the mix or do the mix myself, it will be up to you.

# 6 : I've put some demos here for you to listen. They are all done using virtual instruments and composed/orchestrated/produced by myself.

# 7 : I give unlimited revisions... I want you to be happy!

# 8 : My first aim is at quality. The time spend on a project mostly depend of the complexity of the orchestration.

Interview with Guillaume Jouan

  1. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  2. A: People often think that the virtual instruments of today still sound like in the 80's. Sometimes they don't even understand when you say you've played the full orchestra all by yourself. Oh, and people tend to think that because you like doing "energetic" compositions (with many notes), you won't be able to do the slow/peaceful stuff... Sometimes it's true because you won't be able to put emotion in it, but most of the times, and technically speaking, people who can do more can also do less.

  3. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  4. A: I would say my virtual instrument skill. I can make a virtual orchestra sound pretty realistic, and it's definitely not that simple.

  5. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  6. A: John Williams, Elliot Goldenthal, Thomas/David Newman, Hans Zimmer, James Horner, Alan Silvestri, Alan Menken, Michael Kamen, Danny Elfman, John Barry... to name only a few !

  7. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  8. A: What kind of music or composer's style do they want me to approach. What do they have in mind. Is there a deadline, not because I need my sleep, but because a good orchestration can take some time.

  9. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  10. A: Orchestral... I also like to mix it with electronic music and things like that.

  11. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  12. A: To give my best for each project. It is as simple as that. If I feel like I won't be the right person to handle a project, I tell it immediately, so that they can find a better profile to do so. Call me a fool, but I believe in honesty.

  13. Q: How would you describe your style?

  14. A: Reasonably complex and yet efficient? At least that's what I'm trying to do.

  15. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  16. A: I know Raena, which is a very gifted singer with an amazing technic. I also heard a lot of awesome stuff in many categories... a lot of talented guys I would definitely enjoy working with.

  17. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  18. A: Use the force... like... really ! Feel the music before thinking rationally.

  19. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  20. A: I mainly compose music for short films. I also like to work on animation projects and video games cinematics.

  21. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  22. A: It's very minimalist. I like it this way... it makes me feel more like a poet than a computer scientist.
