mdemixage on SoundBetter

Clarity, space and taste. Communication is key, let me turn your ideas to another level.

Hey! I'm mdemixage! A mixing and mastering engineer based in Madrid and working fully remote to all parts of the globe. My music career started when I was 19, producing and being a member of a electronic band. After 3 years studying sound engineer and learning more and more I decided to move to London to pursue my dream of mixing and mastering records. I developed my knowledge by completing an Advanced Diploma in Sound Engineering and Music Production at Abbey Road Institute. In 2020 I started working for James F Reynolds (Dua Lipa, Calvin Harris, BTS)

I can work with songs at any stage of completion (pre-production, demos, premixes, mixes). I have access to a large range of professional top-of-the-line equipment (PMC 6, Avantone, UAD Satellite, UAD Apollo) in a fully treated room.

My average turnaround is roughly 3 to 4 days per song for mixing and one day for mastering.

I also strive to have the best communication possible with my clients to ensure they are happy with each stage and therefore the final product.

This is not just a job to me but a passion and a privilege.

Used Miguel for mixing and mastering band track. He had great communication and we were really happy with the result (especially because the stems we gave him we're a bit tricky). We will definitely be using him again. Thanks!

Miguel was great to work with. He provided a fantastic turn around on his initial mix, applied the changes we wanted very effectively, and made the song sound so much fuller and crisper then the non-mixed version.

I worked with Miguel on my debut single Every Colour Of You. He went above and beyond to deliver the exact sound I had been dreaming of. From the very start of the project Miguel took the time to talk with me in depth and really find out what I wanted to achieve soundwise as an artist. He communicated clearly throughout and delivered ontime. Miguel was also so generous with his studio time and introduced me to new musical concepts and ideas. He is a true artist, who is honest and passionate about his work. I can't wait to work with him again!

Interview with mdemixage

  1. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  2. A: A rock album recorded in Abbey Road (I won't say the artist). Also mixing a beat tape which is R&B style.

  3. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  4. A: Digital because having to recall would drive me mad.

  5. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  6. A: I like to be involved in projects and help people get to the stage of releasing their music.

  7. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  8. A: My clients most commonly ask me for my portfolio. My answer is I send them a range of the genres I have mixed.

  9. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  10. A: One of the biggest misconceptions is that often they think mixing involves writing and making music.

  11. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  12. A: One question I would ask is what are they looking for in the song. This can be helped by asking them for references of tracks where I can get ideas from.

  13. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  14. A: My advice for a customer would be to listen to their references and ensure you know that the provider is trustworthy and communicates well.

  15. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  16. A: If I was on a desert island I would take and SM57 mic, distressor, pair of headphones, computer and an Apogee duet.

  17. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  18. A: I started as a musician however realised that my path led me to the engineering and recording side. From working in those fields for some time I then realised I had an interest in mixing and I pursued this further. I have been working in music of some sort for 5 years. I have been focused on mixing for the last two of those 5.

  19. Q: How would you describe your style?

  20. A: As previously stated I do not focus on any particular genre therefore I do not have a specific style. I like when I can understand every instrument in the mix, I like creating different spaces and textures.

  21. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  22. A: I would like to work with Trent Reznor because he approaches the sound in a very unusual way that I think separates himself from the rest of the genre.

  23. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  24. A: Sometimes a good production is the secret ingredient for a loud and good sounding mix.

  25. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  26. A: I do not have a specific genre that I usually work on. The last seven mixes were all different in style. There isn't a genre I prefer over anything else.

  27. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  28. A: I would consider my strongest skill working with vocals. This could be because prior to becoming a mix engineer I worked for one year in the cinema industry where I was a dialogue editor. That job taught me how to treat and approach a vocal amongst other elements in a song or movie.

  29. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  30. A: More than often there are some instruments that get lost, I feel one of the most important jobs I have is to bring these instruments back to life as often they are important. I will ensure I place them in the correct side of the stereo field and do anything more to make them come back into the mix and be heard. I always look for the excitement in the song and try to surprise the listeners, adding some ear candy or changes in atmosphere etc.

  31. Q: What's your typical work process?

  32. A: Once receiving the wav files I import them to my template and I have a listen of the rough mix. The next thing is I ensure that I have the notes from the client at hand and I will search for references for the track. To start the mix I will focus on timing and pitch and if there needs to be changes I will do this first. From this point on the mixing process will start at the rhythm section focusing on the bass and drums until they sound consistent and I can move on to the other elements of the song. Once there I will take a small break to refresh my ears and after will continue with EQ, Compression, Effects, Automation and so on. Once the mix is done I will check it in the various speakers that I mentioned above. I will send this on to the client to see if they're happy or if they want a revision.

  33. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  34. A: In terms of my listening setup at my studio I have a variety of speakers in order to achieve different purposes in the mix. My main speakers are Focal Shape 65 and M-Audio BX5. I also have an Avantone mono speaker. Apart from speakers I have two sets of headphones, one being Sennheiser HD800s and the other are Focal Spirit Professional. Usually one of the last things I do with the mix is test it through iPhones and various small home speakers such as a UE Boom. In terms of the rest of my setup I work mostly with UAD; I have the Apollo QUAD and a Satellite OCTO. I therefore have lots of UAD plugins as well as Soundtoys, Fabfilter, Waves and Native Instruments. I mix in a medium treated room.

  35. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  36. A: I get inspired by various genres of music, I am passionate about knowing and listening to as many artists as possible. I also get in inspired by other mix engineers, for example Spike Stent and Tchad Blake.

  37. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  38. A: The most common type of work I do is post production; primarily mixing and sometimes mastering.
