Interview with AJxOTB

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: I have to say I love everything Ryan Ramirez and I collab on. If you haven't heard his stuff go check him out! He is super talented!

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: A remix for a client based out of LA.

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: Not at the moment, but I will definitely update this once I do!

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: Digital! All day! Although there are sounds you can only get in their purest forms through analog, technology is crazy and they have taken the sounds to a whole new level. I will not say analog is dead... but it is barely living. Lol.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: To not stop until you are satisfied! (within reason)

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: The freedom to create the music that I love. There are no boundaries and the possibilities are endless.

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: What do you charge for exclusive tracks? Contact me.

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: That's its only about music. You have to know the business side too.

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: Who are some of your influences? What kind of vibe are you looking for?

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: No advice really. As long as you have an idea, I can turn it into a song. Let's create!

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: Give me any MPC, midi keyboard, 2 monitors, and a laptop. Hopefully there is a source of power and Wi-Fi. Lol.

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: I got introduced to creating music on a game that came out on PlayStation that would let you make beats with their selection of loops. Super dope concept. From then I knew this is what I wanted to do, so I have been doing this for the better part of 15 years.

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: Being born and raised in the Midwest I get a blend of all styles of music so its hard to say! Let me know what you think!

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: Sy Ari Da Kid. Super talented guy! Everything he puts out is ridiculous!

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: Don't fight the beat block! Lol! It too shall pass!

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: I love to blend genres when creating but I was raised in the 90's so R&B is my first love. Although, I love hip-hop/rap just as much. Pop is a super close 3rd.... I love the vibe of pop music, and Pop infused R&B is the best!

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: My strongest skill would be my ability to blend sounds that don't necessarily belong together and most times people don't notice until I point it out.

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: It sounds so cliché, but I bring a different vibe! A lot of the artists I have worked with tell me that my music makes them dig deeper into their creativity!

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: I usually start by messing around with a synth or bass until I come up with a melody then I build from there. Although I love working with samples, I try to stay away from them due to sample clearance. We all seen what went down with "Blurred Lines".

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: My first piece of equipment was a Roland MV8000, which I still pull out from time to time. I have dabbled with EVERY DAW you can name, but I know FL Studio like the back of my hand so that's my go to. Been using it since I was 13.

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: I am a big fan of D'Mile… hands down one of the best in the game! Also have to pay homage to all of the greats in the game like Dre, Pharrell, Ye, Timbo, Scott Storch, Tim & Bob, Cool & Dre. As well as all of the greats making waves now like London, Metro, the whole 808 Mafia, TM88, I could go on for days on this list! You can never forget the likes of Teddy Riley, Babyface, Raphael Sadiiq, Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis... man I could go on for DAYS on that list too! But I will keep it short. Lol!

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: I create original music for clients all over the world. I have created rearing scores for a variety of indie films which helped me get into sync licensing.
