Interview with Benji T

  1. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  2. A: At the time of typing this I'm working on an album by a local singer/songwriter. My job is to re-record some guitars, clean up the tracks, and mix.

  3. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  4. A: It'll be fun.

  5. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  6. A: I love music and I love working with it, simple as that.

  7. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  8. A: I usually ask for reference tracks, and if auto-tune/drum-triggering/note quantization are acceptable.

  9. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  10. A: Don't read interviews, go check out their work instead!

  11. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  12. A: Get familiar with the material, get a feel for it.

  13. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  14. A: It's a simple setup really – a treated room and several pairs of speakers. I have a few gear pieces for guitar recording and re-amping.

  15. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  16. A: Recording – analog, mixing – digital. This was you get the best of both worlds without having to rob a bank.

  17. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  18. A: It has to be the idea that a mix engineer can make a masterpiece out of a poorly composed, badly arranged and recorded track. Doesn't happen.

  19. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  20. A: I feel more comfortable with live instruments as opposed to synths, drum beats, etc.

  21. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  22. A: Attention to detail.

  23. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  24. A: I help it be the song I feel it was intended to be. I try not to interfere with that.

  25. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  26. A: Andrew Scheps and Adam 'Nolly' Getgood are two of my favorites.
