Dimitri Toonen on SoundBetter

Having produced and mixing mostly his own material, Dimitri Toonen's mixes and productions speak for them self.

As a progressive rock musician I've produced and mixed 2 of my own albums. Being a musician for over 25 years and having a lot of experience in the studio gave me a good foundation how music should sound to me. As a mixing engineer I'm very precise and will work with the client to get the sound that is desired. My background is progressive-rock music which has a lot of different influences which can be very interesting in mixing. So I feel at home in different genres. Being an recording artist myself I understand deeply what I means to put your music that you've carefully written en produced over a long period in other peoples hands. So, I handle your music with the most care and respect as will handle my own music.

My setup is quite modern and simple. I work predominantly in the box (Cubase) using analog summing.

Interview with Dimitri Toonen

  1. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  2. A: Stay true to what you want. Even if you think have idea's that are different then the norm or what's adviced by "gurus", it is still your music and therefore your creative process. A creative process should never be stagnated by "the norm".

  3. Q: What's your typical work process?

  4. A: First I make sure that the client and I are on the same page, so that they know what I'll be doing with their music. We should establish reference track(s) for the album/songs so that I can get inside their head and that there are no suprises as where I'm going with it.

  5. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  6. A: To be honest, my previous 2 album that I made is something that I'm very proud of. On those albums I wrote all songs and played all instruments on it (except the drums). That is also the reason I understand how it feels to give away you songs to someone who should then mix or master it. It is you baby that you've worked on for a long time and I can really respect that.

  7. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  8. A: I've just finished my album. So I'm not working on something particular at the moment. But I'll be writting again soon. Can't help it.

  9. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  10. A: Yes. Hugo Ribeiro. He's an incredible drummer and without a doubt I would hire him again for my new album. So easy to work with and he just understands the music to provide the best drums you can think of.

  11. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  12. A: I like a combination of both worlds. Preferable without a hassle when it comes to recalls.

  13. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  14. A: I love making songs sounding a good as they can be.

  15. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  16. A: Do you have a particular sound in mind? I'm looking for a reference basically so that I can found out what the client is aiming for in terms of sound so that I can provide them that.

  17. Q: How would you describe your style?

  18. A: My style is 70s prog-rock sound with a modern twist. To ellaborate on that. I like music that has dynamics in it. So no over compression or over processing of sounds. Music needs to breathe and be the way it is recorded usually.

  19. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  20. A: I work on rock and metal music. Preferably progressive rock music.

  21. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  22. A: My studio setup is minimalistic. And that's for a reason. I like analog gear, but I also like the ability to do recalls easily. As I'm usually working on several mixes over the period over several days sometimes it makes it a lot easier. I so like analoge gear though, but it needs to fit into my workflow. I use Cubase 11 Pro with 2 UAD apollo interfaces hooked to a Neve orbit summing device. For monitoring I use Focal speakers.

  23. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  24. A: I'm very much inspired by Steven Wilson in terms of his ability to produce and mix oustanding records with a minimalistic setup as his home studio. Mixing engineers that inspire me are: Andrew Scheps, Greg Wells, Fab Dupont, Andy Wallace, Jacquire King, Bill Schnee and Al Schmitt. In terms of musician/bands that inspire me the list is huge. To name a few: Opeth, Steven Wilson, Steve Lukather, Simon Philips, Steve Vai, Pink Floyd, Dream Theater, David Crosby.
