Miguel Navarro on SoundBetter

I provide high-quality nylon-string guitars for your songs

There are few things I enjoy more than a nice and warm acoustic guitar sound, and that’s what I aim for on every project I work on. Nylon guitar is the heart and soul of Latin folk music, and I have devoted my life to it. It is so versatile that you can hear it in basically any genre of music.

I maintain clear and quick communication with all my clients and make sure that the final result aligns with their expectations.

I have a beautiful set of guitars and a charango, so go ahead and ask me to record some baritone guitar, some steel string or electric!

I have a degree in tango guitar from the EMPA, a prestigious conservatory located in Buenos Aires, Argentina. I also completed a master’s program in tango at one of the leading world music schools in Europe, Codarts (Rotterdam, NL).

Miguel has been a dream with work with. He is easy going but professional, deeply generous and doesn’t let his ego get in the way like so many musicians and producers do. Absolutely fantastic, I’m already working with him on other projects.

Working with Miguel was amazing for me. He is a great performer and took a couple of days to master my piece and practice it and then performed it super beautifully. But what I like about him was not just his dedication but also his flexibility and and the ease with which he collaborated and got back to me really quickly. I’m really looking forward to working with him again.

Interview with Miguel Navarro

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: During my time in the Netherlands I got the opportunity to work with a big orchestra and play some of my arrangements, it was a big challenge but incredibly rewarding, there no better feeling than listening to a group of people playing what you have been working on the paper for months.

  3. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  4. A: I promise to commit to their projects as if they were my own personal ones.

  5. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  6. A: I really like being confronted to create something over so many different musics from people all over the world, with genres that might be a bit unknown to me.

  7. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  8. A: Can you play this or that in a tango style? and the answer is yes! anything can be a tango, something it can be more tricky than other, but I've had nice tango fusions experiences with my clients.

  9. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  10. A: The concept of "world music" has always been a bit strange to me as a way to describe traditional folk music, because it doesn't say anything about what's the actual music that you do.

  11. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  12. A: For me knowing what my client is expecting to hear when I deliver a track is very importante, so I always ask for detailed description of way they have in mind, audio references are always welcome and helpful, because many times words are not enough when describing music.

  13. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  14. A: Good communication is key, be honest, direct, no pretensions, there is no thing as to much information or details, don't be afraid to ask questions or to point things that you don't like.

  15. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  16. A: My guitar, of course, a laptop, a microphone, a interface, don't need more for a desert Island ;)

  17. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  18. A: I started playing the guitar when I was 8, but I started studying seriously at 14 years old. When I was 18 I entered music school in Chile, my home, studied 3 years of classical guitar and composition. After that I moved to Argentina chasing my dream of learning Argentinean Tango, music that I have been playing ever since. In 2021 I moved to Rotterdam, The Netherlands, to follow a masters program at Codarts, one of the leading world music schools in Europe. Thought my academic journey I have been active playing and writing music with different projects, mainly Tango music, recorded a handful of albums and toured locally and Internationally.

  19. Q: How would you describe your style?

  20. A: I take big inspiration from the big names of the traditional music of Latin-America but at the same time I love modern music, fusion, go further with harmonies, rhythms. I think that's reflected on my style of writing and playing.

  21. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  22. A: I would love to work with Yamandu Costa, he is an incredible musician and a model for me as a guitar player.

  23. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  24. A: Keep it simple, trust your hears.

  25. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  26. A: World Music, Latin, Folk, Pop, Electro.

  27. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  28. A: Been versatile, I consider myself a musician before a guitar player. Been a composer/arranger gives me a different approach at the time of recording music and working with my clients.

  29. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  30. A: Nice a warm acoustic guitars, a fresh view from a South American guitar player.

  31. Q: What's your typical work process?

  32. A: First of all I ask all the questions to my client in order to get closer to what they have in mind. Take some notes, listing to references, and start working on the music. I play/write the music for a while before I press record, I try to "own" the piece.

  33. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  34. A: I have a nice and cozy home studio, these are some of my beloved pieces of gear: Mac Studio M1 Max 2022 Apollo Twin X AKG C414 XLll Carlos Lopez Luthier Classical Guitar Ibanez LGB30 Electric Guitar Gitane DG-250M Gypsy Jazz Guitar Baritone Nylon Strings Guitar Charango

  35. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  36. A: Juanjo Dominguez, Los indios Tabajaras, Yamandu Costa, Antoine Boyer, Julian Lage, Rudi Flores, Django Reinhardt, Astor Piazzolla, Roberto Grela.

  37. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  38. A: Nylon/Acoustic guitar accompaniment, solos, solo arrangements, Argentinean Tango, Gypsy Jazz, Folk/Acoustic, electric jazz guitar.

  39. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  40. A: Right know I'm working on a project with a tango singer from Buenos Aires, planning recordings and tour.

  41. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  42. A: I would recommend Francisco Martinez, a colleague and dear friend, one of the most hard working person I know.

  43. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  44. A: Digital has become a very accesible and powerful tool in the last years, I use it and love it, but there is just something with analog gear that makes it so appealing
