Recording/Mixing/Mastering

15 years working with musicians, performing and engineering. I engineer recordings in studios or at my home, mix recordings and record overdubs at my home, and connect singer/songwriters with professional musicians. I can get impressive mixes out of clients' home recordings in a majority of cases.

I mix or master recordings at my home studio, and I also have here the capacity to make recordings with 16 simultaneous tracks using modified microphones, preamps, and digital converters, as well as high-end studio monitors. Up to 96 kHz. The mixing room here was measured and treated by a professional acoustician.

Many recording projects benefit from a more sonically isolated environment, bigger rooms, more rooms, etc, so I often recommend to clients that we go to one of a number of studios in Chicago for basic tracking, based on the project's needs. The recordings made there are brought back to my house for overdubs and mixing, where studio day rates do not apply.

I can pitch correct vocals or other instruments and do restoration with natural results.

My usual rate for (pre-)mastering is $400 for an average-length album project, for digital and/or analog media.

I encourage those clients who would like to do some or much of the recording and/or editing work themselves. In general I stay out of the way in terms of musical creativity, though I can help sometimes with part writing or harmony. I feel best about a project when we have made a recording of quality that will stand the test of time and everyone has learned something that will be useful in the future.
