Working with ben is effortless.Ben is an absolute professional. He delivers without having to be micromanaged and the quality of the files he sends is superb. Highly recommend hiring him for your guitar needs. Quick turnaround time too. You will NOT be disappointed.
I sent Ben two songs that needed rhythm and lead guitar tracks. I gave him a few ideas but basically told him to just give me something good. What I got back was way better than good. Great guitarist, outstanding tracks, very quick turnaround. I will use Ben for ALL my further recordings.
Interview with Ben Forehand
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: Joseph Patrick Moore
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: I actually just played on Jason Upton’s 20 year collections record. Many of his fav songs over the last 2 decades. He really encouraged me to play based on my musical instinct rather than any “appropriate” habit. Some of the songs we tracked without a click track just playing to each other. It was a really vibey and special recording. 22 songs in 3 days.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: Mostly Country projects in Nashville
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: It just depends on the project. Some analog sounds amazing and some digital is completely necessary!
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: That I will perform at the same level on their projects as any other project I’ve been a part of.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: I enjoy the flexibility and fluidity of my work.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: How did you get those sounds? Lots of trail and error!
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: That it’s easy and not hard work.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: What’s the timeline for submission? What’s their reference for the song? Are there any specific melodies or parts they are hearing? Can you send me a 2 track?
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Don’t be shy and communicate clearly with expectations and desires.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Old Martin. Old Fender Amp. Old Strat. Tape Recorder. Some sort of Solar Generator so i can have power!
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I’ve been pursuing music since I was young.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Heartfelt
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Donald Fagen. I love his concept of melody.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Put all your guitar parts down the middle and see if they fit together like a puzzle or if that cancel things out.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Gospel / Worship / Modern Country / Singer-Songwriter
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: My strongest skill is layering and melodic development.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: My favorite guitar parts are the ones that you can sing. I try and create singable guitar parts that add to the overall experience of listening to a song. I bring a fresh energy and concept while also delivering nostalgia.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I like to feel the vibe of the song for a while before I jump in. I want to feel where the lyric or melody is taking me and then intuitively try and drive my parts in that direction. The simple process of following my instincts usually produce the best parts.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: My home setup is Logic or PT. API / Neve pre’s. Apollo Twin with tons of UA plug-ins. I like the combination of a Beyerdynamic M160 ribbon and Shure 545 dynamic mic for my guitar sounds.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Some of the people I’ve worked with that continue to inspire me are: Adam Blackstone (MD / Justin Timberlake) Danny Duncan (Engineer) Jeremy Edwardson (Producer)
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Most projects my job is to create guitar sections that elevate the energy of the song or highlight the vocal melodies. It’s about staying out of the way while creating a foundation for melody.
