Interview with Josh Daigrepont

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: I am proud of the Ugly God "Bumps and Bruises" record. I was the mix engineer for the entire album. It didn't turn out how I would have personally wanted it to, but I am proud of the fact I was able to give Ugly God everything he asked for when working on the record.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: I am currently working with a few Independent artists as well as working on building my network up.

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: I would recommend Darryl Thorp. Fellow CRAS alumni, He has done some amazing things with some of the best in music.

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: I would say digital ONLY because of the convenience factor. With the industry moving as fast paced as it is, recalling digital mixes is much easier than analog mixes. But I love the sound and workflow of analog because there is nothing like it.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: I promise I will give my 110% on my work with them no matter how big or small the record/client may be. I give the same effort to someone just beginning their career as I would the biggest names in the industry. And I also promise to keep working until the client is fully satisfied.

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: I like fulfilling the artists wants and needs. There isn't too many better feelings than a happy client and hearing something that they created come to life above what they intended it to be.

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: Most common question is price. I will always ask what the budget is and we take it from there. I do my best to work with all budgets.

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: Biggest misconception I've come across is people tend to think what I do can be done easily and finished in minuets. They usually don't realize the time, effort and skill it takes to bring a record to life.

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: I ask what direction they are looking to go in, time frame for the project, any particular creative ideas they may have for the record, and if they have any references similar to the style and sound they are looking for.

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: I would advise them to have the session/stems as clean as possible. I understand small studio and home recordings are the thing now days, so I would advise them to get the cleanest recordings possible and make sure nothing is clipping or has unwanted distortion.

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: I would choose a loaded Macbook (equipped with DAW's and plugins), a SSL AWS console, a pair of Barefoot Monitors, a Shadow Hills Mastering Compressor, and my Kensington Mouse.

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: My career path getting where I am today should be a book or mini movie because it's way too long to type here. But I have been Professionally doing this going on 6 years now. I have had the honor and pleasure of working with and meeting many of the best engineers in the industry. In all, I would like to be known as one of the great engineers who not only does a good job, but that artists love working with.

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: I would say my mixing style is unique. I like to experiment and try new techniques and gear to get the best sound possible.

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: I would love to do studio work with Pharrell. His creativity and production is amazing and he seems like I could mesh well in the studio with him.

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: One music production tip; approach every mix, tracking session, live gig, etc. different. We all have our "go to" plug ins and gear we like to use which is fine, but use your ears and not your habits to give the record what it needs because every record, instrument, sound and artist are different.

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: I usually work on hip-hop, country and some rock.

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: My strongest skill is attention to detail. It is highly important to me to be attentive to the artist or label to bring their vision to life on the record.

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: I feel as if I bring creativity to a song. I always do everything I can to meet the artists or labels need and wants and without getting too in to the producer roll, I like to add my small creative ideas to the mix if it happens to need a little spark.

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: When mixing; I typically receive the mix session or stems and open it in my DAW. I'll take a listen to the tune once or twice and get a feel for the record (and listen to references if any). I will then note what edits, tuning and fixes I need to make before beginning the mix. I will the edit, tune and fix whats needed, then do my "blend mix" where I get a good starting balance before applying any EQ or Dynamics. From there I begin the mix.

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: My personal setup I operate mainly with Protools 12 and Logic Pro X. With my personal setup I mainly work in the box and will usually sum the mixes through a analog buss compressor when printing. The facility I work for (Dauphin Street Sound); I work on either a API 1608 or and SSL AWS 924. I have access to almost every highly recommended piece of outboard gear with brands such as Shadow Hills, API, Millennia, and many more.

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: Musicians: Alicia Keys, Snarky Puppy, Kayne West, Pharrell, Swizz Beats and many many more. Music Production Professionals: Trina Shoemaker, Mark Dearnly, Dave Pensado, Phil Tan and many more.

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: I mostly mix and/or master for clients. I do tracking sessions on occasions but mix for the most part.
