GREAT time working with Shawn - was very patient with my unexpectedly busy schedule, super professional and easy to deal with, and gave me a clear idea of where to take things. Would gladly work with him again in the future!

Interview with Tobias Markell

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: A project I'm very proud of is my latest album release. It's my first time releasing a full album, I used all my savings to purchase beats and get other artists involved and artwork done. It was a hard 3 months doing it on the fly with very little influence but I got it done. My role was the main artist, as always. The glue that hopefully, I wanna believe brought it all together. If you'd like to hear the whole album check it out on my 'News' panel (probably on the right of this.) I don't know when my next album will be, because it drained me doing it, despite having a mass amount of fun writing and recording.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: I'm currently working with producer LX Xander on a new song and hopefully some new writers to bring it alive. Because everyone has a story and I guess, I'm ready to work with the big dogs now.

  5. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  6. A: I'm going to say both. While one's so untamable in my eyes, its unfathomable possibilities are incredible. As for the other, it's widely used and respected by the best in the world. Used correctly you can make anything.

  7. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  8. A: My promise is you'll surely have something money cannot buy. (Despite you paying.) My aim is that you walk away with a project you're happy to have spent your money on and that when it goes out into the world, your fans will enjoy it too.

  9. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  10. A: Music is my therapy, my center. I listen to my old tracks and sometimes gag but bump it in the speakers and sing to it. It reminds me I'm going to be someone someday. I'll be bigger than the ones who doubted me. So I enjoy it, it's like a big F**k you to the people who said I couldn't.

  11. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  12. A: One I get when working with artists: Question: "How do you write punchlines like that? I want to! Can you do mine?" Answer: Sure, why not. I come up with puns and silliness a million times a day. Question: "How long does it take you to come out of writer's block?" Answer: It varies, hours, days, weeks and/or months. I just need a little time to relax and restore myself. So I can find inspiration again. Question: "If you Ghost Write a song for me, do I put your name on it?" Answer: Nope, you pay me and through that payment, my lips are sealed. No one will ever know unless you tell them yourself. Question: "What's your writing negotiation amount for pub splits? Answer: 25% for pub. splits if we co-write, 50% if I write the whole song (non-ghost written) and if Ghostwrited then you pay your portion and carry on as if you wrote it. For features, if I am on the hook it's 25% and for a verse, it's 25% as well.

  13. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  14. A: I'm highly transparent, I can't say I've ever had any misconceptions about my music.

  15. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  16. A: What sounds are you looking for? (Give me model songs.) What's the instrumental sound like? (Send me the beat.) Is there an artist you're trying to imitate? (If so, who?) Have you released music before? (Send me links or an Mp3.) How much time do I have to write this song?

  17. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  18. A: If you'd like to create work that'll bring your vision to life, I'm your guy. Want someone who'll listen and give honest feedback, I'm your guy. I'm straight forwards and goofy but I always take music to a new level that you'll hopefully enjoy. Never be afraid to ask me anything.

  19. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  20. A: My Macbook (Tony), MXL Microphone, a pop filter, Logic Pro X and hopefully a USB so if I find civilization again, I'll have so many writings/songs to blow their mind with.

  21. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  22. A: My path is simple, create music strong enough to someday shake the world. Not be the next Eminem and take over cities and nations, but as close to it as I can get. My goal is to be worth $5 billion. I've been writing poetry since I was about 6 years old. Producing since 2018 and rapping since 2015. I didn't put my first song out until the end of 2016 because I was afraid people wouldn't like me. (Never let that thought STOP you! Because people enjoy me.)

  23. Q: How would you describe your style?

  24. A: Creative and enigmatic. I listen to an instrumental until I can properly channel the feeling, once I do it's game ON! I'll freestyle to it, write and then finally record. Sometimes during recording, I'll do editing along the way until it sounds perfect.

  25. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  26. A: An artist I'd hope to work with someday would probably be Post Malone. Why not? Post has been the man since his first drop, I remember listening to 'White Iverson' when it had 115 views on Soundcloud. His style is different, his lyrics are catchy, he's tall as I would like to be and he seems like a very chill dude, like me. So I'm sure we could make something together and take over the world. (He already has, but you know, I could be the icing on the cake.)

  27. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  28. A: Don't be afraid to be different. Don't be afraid to be vulnerable, because you're only human. Just because people don't say when they are hurt, they have been at some point in their lives and you could be the one to say it for them.

  29. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  30. A: Hip-Hop and Rap. While many confuse the two, I feel they are two dancers moving at the same groove while wearing opposite outfits. I've dabbled in Rock and EDM. They don't come as naturally to me as Rap/HipHop does.

  31. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  32. A: My strongest skill is relation. I have been homeless, I've had a three-story house with a nice yard, big cars, I've lived with other people (punishingly), I've had cars repossessed, I've had money, been broke, had great friends, had friends become enemies, had lovers and been on the moon with them until they've turned on me and twisted the knife on their way out the door. Including a lot of other positive and negative circumstances. So me being able to place and harness emotions some people may not have words for, I probably been there and know how to recreate while bringing it alive.

  33. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  34. A: Character, charisma, and a unique sound that I don't feel many have explored as of yet. Creativity at its finest, I'm not always a serious person, when it comes to music I do my best to have fun with it even during the hard times when it feels like nothing is working out. So a feeling of completeness when the song is complete it will have evolved into something you didn't expect.

  35. Q: What's your typical work process?

  36. A: Step 1: Listen to the song (Or find one that resonates with me. Step 2: Harmonize with it (bond almost) and freestyle some words to it. (Probably record them as I am easy forget) Step 3: Begin writing. Step 4: Take a snack break and kickback. Thinking of where I want it to go. Step 5: Write some more while recording segments (Usually hook first). Step 6: Listen to the segments and fix what I don't like or proceed to the final step. Step 7: Record the final version. (I sometimes Mix/Master my songs myself utilizing presets in Logic Pro X, I'm not a pro at it yet. However, I'm getting better.)

  37. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  38. A: I've got my Macbook Pro (named Tony), it's a best friend that hasn't failed me as of yet. My XML Microphone and a gracious Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 I got from college along with Logic Pro X. It's all pitched up in my living room, but hey, when you're inspired, that inspirational area has got to be within reach.

  39. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  40. A: That's a big question. Musicians who inspire me: Post Malone, Eminem, Eddie Rath, Tech N9ne, Juice WRLD (RIP) and Yung Lean. Production Professionals for me would be: Crab Lord (On YouTube) and Nick Mira.

  41. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  42. A: I've worked with a hand full of lyricists over the years. Prince CJ Da Poet, Abu Tayub, Kevin Koji, and more. I've mostly offered features and or Ghostwriting for other artists. While the Ghost Writing process isn't something I traditionally do, I have done it and wrote for a few big named artists. One artist reaching a quarter-million streams the first week the song debuted in 2020. I'll work with you until you're happy with the results.
