The reach of my work extends all the way from Orlando and Los Angeles, to Superbowl performances and Beyoncé's world tours. Although I work with major and indie label talent, I do enjoy the creative freedom that indie artists welcome a bit more.

Interview with Daniel McMullan

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: I produced a cover song of David Foster's Grown up Christmas List and got a nod from the publisher as being their favorite rendition.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: I am working on creating a modern-day LaFace Records.

  5. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  6. A: Analog all day! Digital is only an emulation of the infinite. There can be no harmonic tones that naturally form in the grit of the analog world which provide that extra-dimensional warmth and feel. But I respect the clarity, uniformity, and fourth-dimensional element of the digital realm.

  7. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  8. A: I will be the support you need, the cheerleader, the encourager, and mentor while working on your music. You will have my best efforts and 21 years of producing and mixing experience.

  9. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  10. A: I love the freedom to explore new sounds with open-minded artists/musicians.

  11. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  12. A: Q: Do you have any examples of your work? A: I have provided examples and credits on my profile page. Q: Do you tune vocals that sound natural or robotic? A: I tend to lean towards a more natural vocal sound but will go wherever you decide is best for your desired sound. Q: How many song revisions do you do? A: My aim is to get it right the first time. A revision with clear notes guiding me from what I did to where you want to go is fine, anything beyond this may indicate a mis-match of provider/client. (I've never been asked to do a 3rd revision but that would be the cap.)

  13. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  14. A: Producing is as easy as clicking a mouse. Recording and mixing is just pushing buttons lol.

  15. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  16. A: Is this song part of a bigger project like an EP or LP or is it just a Single? How long have you been creating music? Would you like your vocals tuned?

  17. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  18. A: Have a clear idea of what you want and be able to express your vision effectively. Have other song examples ready in order to better explain your desired end result.

  19. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  20. A: Macbook - to express myself creatively, guitar - to create freely, George Foreman grill - self-explanatory lol, Smartphone - to communicate when needed and read digital books, and a water bottle that purifies water as drinking water.

  21. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  22. A: My career path has always been creating music. I've been working in various music studios across the U.S. for over 2 decades.

  23. Q: How would you describe your style?

  24. A: My style is universal. I can compose music of all types and mix to match any genre.

  25. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  26. A: Michael Jackson was the only artist I ever wanted to work with because he had the ability to make you want to dance and sing regardless of how tough you tried to be. His reach was worldwide and not any one specific group of people.

  27. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  28. A: Pre-production and artist development are lost facets of the music industry. Focus on these and you will find your identity in the seemingly overcrowded industry.

  29. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  30. A: I work on all Billboard Top 100 type records.

  31. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  32. A: I've been mixing and producing for over 21 years and can do them both with equal skill.

  33. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  34. A: I look for the nuances that make a song unique and magnify those. I combine my 21 years of experience as a music producer & mix engineer together to provide the best sonic and creative mixes possible!

  35. Q: What's your typical work process?

  36. A: I typically consult with the artist/musician prior to starting a song mix or production to get a grasp on their goals. Once established, I create a clear plan that outlines a complete solution to meet the demands of the project.

  37. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  38. A: I have a 900 sq ft recording & mixing studio using Apples fastest Mac (iMac Pro) along with the Avid S3 console, the latest Pro Tools software and a plethora of plugins in addition to outboard gear.

  39. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  40. A: DJ Quik, Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis, Babyface, Timbaland & David Foster

  41. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  42. A: I record, mix, tune vocals, produce music, play piano, and compose tracks, beats & movie scores/cues
