Interview with Sebastien Fontaine

  1. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  2. A: Question : How much? Answer : Let's talk about what you want before

  3. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  4. A: My pedalboard, my guitars , my 1176, my computer and Audio Interface.

  5. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  6. A: 1.Prepare you session and make everything clear before mixing. 2.Move fader and try to get a good bounce before starting EQ, there is no need to touch everything. 3.Don't over compress your tracks, specially if it comes from a VST, they are already compressed. Same for electric guitar. If they are saturated , that means they are already compressed. Otherwise you will lose all the width

  7. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  8. A: I am forever a Pro Tools user. I monitor through a pair of Focal Shape Twin Monitors. For tracking, I use a Neve 1073. For recording guitar, I have the Headrush Gigboard and my pedalboard. I have a bunch of Free the tone pedals, Strymon and TC-Electronic. I mix with UAD/Slate Digital plugins.

  9. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  13. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  14. A: It's not about analog and digital anymore. it's about good music and production.

  15. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  16. A: I promise to listen to your vision and to do my best to reach it.

  17. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  18. A: As a musician,I like to create melodies that touch people's heart. As a mixer, I like to start mixing a song from scratch and take it to the next level,

  19. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  20. A: People think they can mix because they own a suite of plugins or because they have seen some "tips" on YouTube from random people. But it's not like this at all. It's It's all about gain staging, Eq and compression. It needs some work to understand how it works.

  21. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  22. A: My advice is, if you love music and you are a true artist, do your best in the creative process, I'll do my best in the mixing or composing process.

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: As a musician, I've been the first French visual kei artist produced in Japan by a record label. Then I start touring and performing all over the world. 30. A: I usually work on rock, metal, pop, acoustic.

  31. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  32. A: As a musician and mixer, I can identify what elements are important and not important. Then, it's easy to take the song where it needs to go.

  33. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  34. A: As a musician, I can have a different vision than a non-musician. I don't want to put too much of my feelings on it and listen to the artists carefully.

  35. Q: What's your typical work process?

  36. A: When I mix for a client, I start to listen the rough. I need to get a clear picture of where I want to to go before touching any faders. Then I start dealing with drums and create the magic around the drums.

  38. A: As a musician, I am inspired by legendary Japanese artists such as "X Japan", "Luna Sea" and "L'arc en Ciel" As a mixer, I am very inspired by Chris Lord-Algre and his brother Tom. I also like the work of Tony Maserati, Joe Barresi, Eric Westfall, Steve Pretage, and Steve, Slate.
