Interview with Alex Maglione
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I was brought up in a family where my mom and dad were in radio and TV. I obviously fell in love with the audio side. My first job was running a board at WJOY-AM. After high school I went to Full Sail University and graduated salutatorian of my class. From there I came to Nashville to start my career. I'm in my 10th year of working professionally in music in Nashville.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I work in some of the nose well known and established studios in Nashville. Studios like Sound Emporium Studios, Sound Kitchen Studios, Omni Sound Studios to name a few I love most. I have access to all of the industry standards as far as gear and microphones go. Personally I have a home setup of a MacBook Pro, UAD Apollo x4, Genelec speakers, and some of the best plugins, UAD, Waves, Fab Filter, SoundToys, and PluginAlliance.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: BOTH! I love taking advantage of the best of both worlds. I pride myself though on recording real instruments.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: My client will be happy with their final product and the experience they had getting it there.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: I get to live my childhood dream everyday. My Job doesn't feel like a job. I get to make music everyday.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I'm inspired by some of the men and women I share common ground with who are achieving their goals and also making their dreams come true. Some of the engineers that inspire me went to the same university I went to, Full Sail University. Awarded Engineers like Leslie Brathwaite (Pharrell, Beyonce, Jay-Z) and Jordan "DJ Swivel" Young (Chainsmokers, Beyonce, Jay Sean).
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I record and mix full-length multitrack albums. That process includes everything from microphone and gear selection all the way through the final mix.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: If the project isn't ready for whatever the next step is, don't force it to the next step... Especially when the you are working on a top level. I don't want a client waisting their money and time.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Neumann U47, Neve 1073, Tannoy SM-10 Gold Speakers, DBX 160VU, API 550b.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: My style is organic. Staying true to the vocal or instrument I'm mixing or recording. I don't want to make something sound like something it's not or try to get something out of it that isn't there to begin with.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Dave Matthews Band. Their music is so organic and my style is exactly that, plus they are my favorite band!
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: FILE MANAGEMENT. With out proper file management organization and working quickly is impossible.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: All types. Nashville is no longer just country. People come here from all over to make music. I work on Rock, Pop, Country, Gospel, R&B, Classical, and Big Band.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: My strongest skill is my ability to hear whats "right" from "wrong". I grew up with a radio background so I have an ear for what the consumer likes to hear and what has "hit potential".
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: A full quality sound. I take pride in and pay a ton of attention to what needs to be pronounced in each instrument or vocal.
